OPINIONS ON AN IRON

Hello sewing community! I am looking to replace my iron with a ‘grown up’ one,
haha! I’ve been researching into irons designed to be used for sewing and
quilting (aka a bit more heavy duty than just your regular home iron).

I stumbled upon the Oliso and found great feedback on it from blogs. However I
was wondering if anyone here had used one and what your thoughts were? Sometimes
it’s hard to tell which blogs give reviews in exchange for things, etc. So to
have a regular community give their opinions might help round out my choice.

Anyways, if you have any thoughts or suggestions I’d love to hear it!

I used a $30ish dollar Tefal iron for many years. Just got myself a $200ish
Rowenta iron.

The cheap one worked, but the Rowenta one is much nicer. Much nicer steam output
and consistency, doesn't leak and drip water. Easier to adjust and set, etc. I'm
definitely happy with my new iron, but it wouldn't be the first thing I would
recommend getting.

I swear by the Rowenta iron I got at a thrift store for just a few dollars.
Great ironing surface, great steam, gets wonderfully hot. I actually bought a
second one when I ran across it to have a backup, and would not hesitate to buy
a new one at full price if I needed to. When new they cost a bit more than some
of the more run of the mill irons, but totally worth it in my opinion. I have
bought a few different irons at the thrift store, which means that they saw some
good use before getting to me. I had two Sharks. Both worked fine at first, but
crapped out within a few months. I tried an Oliso, but honestly like my Rowenta
more.

Whichever iron you do use, be sure to read the manual about what kind of water
to use. My Rowenta recommends tap water, not distilled water. As I understand
it, distilled water is too pure and can cause issues. I actually use drinking
water because it is convenient to have a small bottle near my iron.

Also noteworthy, if you are not using your iron for extended periods of time,
you need to drain any water left in the reservoir. That’s not a problem for me,
I use it probably 3x/week. Any water left in there for a while may corrode the
reservoir, possibly leading to brown staining on fabric later.
