THIS TOOL TRACKS POLITICIANS WHO SAY HE WON Election deniers are in power around the country. This tracker tool lets voters see where they’re in power and where they’re running for office this year. [Source Photo: Alexander Krivitskiy/Unsplash] * * * * * * * * BY Talib Visram3 minute read The 2020 presidential election was contested, to say the least. Despite a clear loss, Donald Trump claimed victory over Joe Biden and insisted that there was widespread election fraud. (There was not.) Still, Republicans across the country lined up behind his assertion, publicly claiming that Trump was the rightful president. In the 2022 midterms, voters rejected some of the most vocal so-called election deniers who were running in prominent races. Those included Doug Mastriano, the Republican candidate for Pennsylvania’s governor who boasted that he’d be able to decertify any election result “with the stroke of a pen,” and Arizona’s Kari Lake, also a Republican running for governor, who announced evidence of fraud even before the results came in. But in many states, they did win, particularly in congressional races. At least 170 members of Congress—more than a third—denied or questioned the results of the 2020 election or subsequent ones. A new tracker tool encourages the American public to see where in the country these election deniers are in power, and where they’re running for office this year. It’s intended to educate voters about the threat to democracy, and to communicate that fair and free elections are always necessary, regardless of what policy issues voters care about. SIGN UP Privacy Policy | Fast Company Newsletters “Electiondeniers.org was created to be a one-stop shop to really show the full scope of where election denial is today,” says Lizzie Ulmer, senior VP of strategy and communications at States United, a nonpartisan organization protecting fair and free elections. The tool is split into statewide and congressional offices. Statewide offices are important because those positions have tremendous oversight of elections. According to States United, there are 25 deniers who oversee elections in 19 states. Users can click on any state on a map, which shows where deniers are in elected office. Clicking into Florida, for example, would launch another page that shows that two election deniers—Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody—hold statewide office, and that five have held or run for statewide office since 2022. It also shows how Florida compares to other states in the region (Alabama actually has more), and charts voter turnout from 2016 onward. There’s also a written section with background for each state. Georgia’s page, for instance, tells how Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger refused to give into Donald Trump’s attempted coercion and certified the election. Arizona’s page notes that it was one of the states where Trump planned to send fake presidential electors to claim his victory. There’s also a separate tool for the U.S. Congress, which reportedly contains 153 deniers in the House and 19 in the Senate. Using the tool, you can see that 75% of Montana’s congressional delegation are election deniers, as are 86% of Oklahoma’s, and 91% of Tennessee’s. advertisement States United is transparent about the criteria it uses to classify someone as an election denier. They include falsely claiming that Trump won the 2020 election; spreading misinformation about the election; refusing to certify or concede a race; and participating in litigation to overturn the election or in “Stop the Steal” events. The organization hopes that, when given the information, people will choose to reject election deniers on the ballot. States United data shows that the denier candidates in 2022 received 2.3% to 3.7% less than the expected vote share, including Lake and Mastriano. This reminder remains urgent for the 2024 cycle, as a number of election deniers are on the ballot, including Lake, who is running for senator in Arizona. Ulmer says it’s important to flag these issues to the public now. “Most voters aren’t thinking about voting until it’s time for them to cast their ballots,” she says. Ulmer stresses that this should be a concern for people no matter what policies they care about, or which party they belong to. “These issues actually really aren’t partisan,” she says. That said, with one exception who’s running with the Constitution Party—all of the deniers listed on the tracker are Republicans.
