DAILY UNIVERSAL REGISTER

BRIEFING

UK: ONS publishes estimates of associations between self-reported long Covid and
labour market outcomes; statistics on the market value and financial and
non-financial assets of the UK are released; strike ballot opens for
firefighters belonging to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) in an ongoing dispute
over pay; the British Fashion Council recognises outstanding talent from the
global industry at the Fashion Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
US: Artemis 1 mission’s Orion Spacecraft hopes to make flyby of the moon,
travelling just 80 miles above its surface.
World: G7 nations and Australia plan to implement a cap on Russian crude from
today, coinciding with an EU ban on seaborne imports. A cap on refined products
is scheduled to take effect from February 5, next year; OECD report looks at
health status, health expenditure, access to care, quality of care, and health
risk factors in 36 European countries.

ON THIS DAY

In 1621 a letter sent from London confirmed the importation of honey bees to
North America. The native species did not produce honey, unlike Apis mellifera,
the European honey bee; in 1707 the Society of Antiquaries held its first
recorded meeting at the Bear Tavern in the Strand, London. Set up to study the
period before the reign of James I, the society was granted a royal charter in
1751; in 1766 James Christie held his first auction at his Pall Mall, London,
sale room, of “the property of a noble personage (deceas’d)”, including two
chamber pots. In March 1767 he held his first sale of paintings; in 1848 US
president James K Polk confirmed the discovery of an “abundance of gold” in
California – triggering a mass migration of fortune-seekers. In his fourth
annual message he said: “The accounts . . . in that territory are of such an
extraordinary character as would scarcely command belief were they not
corroborated by . . . authentic reports”; in 1861 William Ellison Jr, a former
African-American slave who became one of the wealthiest slave-owners in the
antebellum South, died, aged 71. He and his sons bought Confederate bonds during
the US Civil War, ultimately financially ruinous, and offered the army 53
slaves.

NATURE NOTES

Slowly and effortfully the heron gained height, its great wings grey against a
grey December sky. The poet Paul Farley has described these big, ungainly birds’
take-off as “begrudging” and “cranky”, but concedes to “the Icarus thing” once
they have gained height — and so it was: as it topped the treeline and tucked
its neck and legs in, it began to really soar. The spot by the road bridge where
it had been fishing is sometimes visited by a little egret, but there was none
there today; it may be that herons do not tolerate competition from these new
arrivals well.
