Not just jazz voices. Voices, period. With a remarkable instrument, and its extraordinary melodic, harmonic and rhythmic range, she was the first vocalist to incorporate the new and challenging bebop language into their singing. Today on The Jazz Legacy we celebrate Sarah’s Centennial with Part 1 of The Divine One: 100 Years Of Sarah Vaughan, covering the years 1944-1960. Featuring some of her most memorable songs — “Mean To Me”, “If You Could See Me Now”, “Shulie A Bop”, “Lullaby Of Birdland”, “Poor Butterfly”, “Misty” and many more. In the company of Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Tadd Dameron, Miles Davis, Roy Haynes, Clifford Brown, Cannonball Adderley, Quincy Jones, and many other jazz giants. A conversation with Father Chester Smith SVD, half of the first set of African-American twins to become Catholic priests. Father Smith grew up in Chicago’s inner city and rose to become an international leader in African-American ministry and youth outreach.Inspired by his mother and a parish priest at Our Lady of the Gardens Church on Chicago’s far south side, his interest in a life of service began early. “Father Chester often spoke of the encouragement he received from Father [Edward] Delaney to become a priest ‘because your people need you,’” said his identical twin brother Father Charles Smith SVD. “Father Delaney’s comments were the foundation of his ministry, encouraging Black men and women to be leaders in their communities, parishes, and churches.” Born five minutes after his brother in 1959, Chester was the second of Charles A. and Mae Ruth (nee Forte) Smith’s four children. As teenagers, the brothers attended Divine Word Seminary High School in East Troy, Wis., and then Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa, where Chester earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology. In 1982, the Smith twins professed religious vows in the Society of the Divine Word at Bay St. Louis, Miss., site of the first Catholic seminary for African-American students. And in 1988, they made history when they were ordained by Most Rev. J. Terry Steib SVD and became the first pair of African-American twins to become priests in the United States.Father Chester Smith once said that he finally and fully committed to the idea of becoming a priest when he was a seminarian, working in the Watts section of Los Angeles. * KCSM HD2 Sunday, 7/14/2024, 8:30am - Like It Is June 30, 2024 Sonny Buxton, part 2. The Man Behind the mic at KCSM, “The Bay Area’s Jazz Station to the World.” Sonny Buxton has met and worked with some of the greatest entertainers in history over the years, from Duke Ellington to Sarah Vaughn, Eartha Kitt, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge and Smokey Robinson. Buxton credits Leonard Russell in Seattle and Charles Sullivan for exposing him to the business side of radio and music by booking shows, clubs and concerts at the Fillmore and the Richmond Auditorium. Buxton proved his business worth again by co-owning several clubs in Seattle years later like The District, Checkmate and Anxious Asp. In San Francisco, Buxton also opened Milestones in 1984, and co-owned Jazz at Pearl’s with Pearl Wong, which closed in 2003. A few of Buxton’s favorite artists include Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Carlos Jobim and anyone with a warm sound or considered American Standard, like Irving Berlin and Frank Sinatra. Buxton feels responsible for enlightening individuals based upon his experiences. He sees a need, and proudly takes on the role to advocate and inform about jazz, a true American classic. Buxton is one of the last of a fading breed of true pioneers, both culturally and historically, in broadcasting. * KCSM HD2 Sunday, 7/14/2024, 9am - Radio 2050 June 30, 2024 Permaculture is a means of personal action and sustainability; emphasizing observation, efficiency, and multiple functions in design.
