hi! welcome to MEMORY VILLAGE!
over the past year, i've been writing poems about experiences long forgotten.
memories, fact or fiction, fragmented and stitched back together through text.
hazy images that blur the line between dream and reality. all of these things
patched together and linked through this website. it contains a number of ASCII
illustrations that serve both as navigation for the site and as context to the
texts in which they are in service to. the illustrations are randomly sorted
every time the viewer visits the page and rearrange themselves every fifteen
seconds. this is to avoid the idea of a linear narrative. poems are chosen over
journal entries or more direct forms of communication so as to allow the viewer
the possibility of relating the text back to their own life and experiences.
access to information is at the core of this project. poems are available as
.txt files, and reference material take the form of .img's and .pdf's. links to
contemporary references are easily accessible and the ideas are not hidden. the
reference files are contextualized through their metadata — the name of the
file, the source, etc. MEMORY VILLAGE is not a masterpiece. poetry is a recent
interest, and the code is shoddy due to my lack of experience. but what i hope
to accomplish with this site is an exploration of medium and form. a different
way of packaging ideas and presenting them to an audience. a patchwork of
disconnected writings linked together solely by the structure of the website
they're housed under. - jcr
this project was inspired by the paintings of pedro figari and gullar's theory
of the non-object, as well as the design studio linked by air, and designer
laurel schwulst. the site was based on mindy seu's ascii town project and the
illustrations are sourced from ascii.co.uk.
