between 1 and 3 billion years ago. The process occurred 100 miles beneath the
Earth’s surface, where carbon dioxide was subjected to severe pressure after
being subjected to extreme heat. Pure carbon was compressed into diamonds and
then moved upward via subterranean volcanic eruptions.
