Pamela Fitzpatrick PAMELA FITZPATRICK PAMELA FITZPATRICK INDEPENDENT PROSPECTIVE PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE HARROW WEST Sign up here to find out when we launch: My name is Pamela Fitzpatrick and I am standing as an independent candidate to be the MP for Harrow West in the next General Election. I am a local candidate truly rooted in the community. I live and work in Harrow West and I have raised my family here. I am the Director of a local charity, which I set up in 2010, which provides free legal advice and representation to people in Harrow. Over the past 14 years this centre has helped thousands of local people avoid being evicted from their home, secured the benefits they are entitled to, challenge issues such as punitive public spaces protection orders and assist in immigration matters such as women who have been trafficked. I have been a Chair of Governors of a local school, an elected councillor and I am a trustee of a local charity which works with young people. I am incredibly proud of our community, however, through my work I am acutely aware of the issues we face in Harrow. I have seen how our local services are struggling to cope in the face of devastating cuts and increased demand, how residents wait ever longer to see a GP and how those children with special needs are denied the support they need to thrive at school. We have a housing crisis in Harrow. We have the lowest level of social housing of any London Borough therefore those on modest incomes are forced into the private rented sector. This often means families are living in cramped conditions in properties with severe disrepair yet are paying extortionate rents. Even those with higher incomes are simply unable to afford to buy a home due to the high cost of property in Harrow. Yet the response by successive Governments and councils alike is to allow for a massive increase in luxury tower blocks which most local people cannot afford to live in and which are used as capital investments rather than for the community. Harrow is one of the most diverse boroughs in the UK. Conflicts and war in other countries do impact on local people yet our politicians all too often fail to understand this. Nothing has highlighted this more than the current situation in Gaza. The level of destruction and death has led to an unprecedented level of local people demanding an end to the violence and calling on our politicians to support a ceasefire. I am a member of Brent and Harrow Palestine Solidarity Campaign and regularly attend both national and local ceasefire marches. I am also a non executive Director of the Peace and Justice Project established by Jeremy Corbyn which brings people together for social and economic justice, peace and human rights in Britain and across the world.
