REVERSO

TIMELESS STORIES SINCE 1931

???video_comp_video_unsupported_text???

INTRODUCTION

A RARE LONGEVITY,
AT THE ORIGIN WAS A CHALLENGE

THE POLO ORIGINS: The Reverso story began with a challenge: to create a
wristwatch that could be worn on the polo field without being smashed. In 1930,
César de Trey, a successful entrepreneur, was travelling in India, where British
army officers had taken up polo. Asked if he could find a way to protect the
glass and dial of their watches during matches, de Trey had the idea of a case
that could be flipped over.

He approached LeCoultre to produce it and, through connections with Jaeger, a
French industrial designer, René-Alfred Chauvot, was engaged to design the case.

STORY OF AN ICON

INTRODUCTION

A PEERLESS HERITAGE,
AT THE ORIGIN WAS A PATENT

THE ORIGINS: On March 4th 1931, the Paris patent office received an application
to register “a watch capable of sliding in its support and being completely
turned over”, the Reverso was born.

1931

THE FIRST REVERSO

Original design
Little more than six months after the patent application for the Reverso case
was made, the first watches reached the market – a remarkable feat, given the
complexity of the 23-part swivelling case mechanism. The design had evolved from
the original square shape, becoming subtly elongated and three gadroons were
added above and below the dial, emphasising the rectilinear geometry of the
case. The dial was offered in silver or black, with a choice of Arabic numerals
and baton indexes and a rectangular chemin de fer minute track. Highly legible
thanks to the absence of ornamentation, it was described in a catalogue as “the
dial of the future”.

FOR MEN AND WOMEN

A STRONG DIVERSITY

Success came quickly.
As a quintessential expression of Art Deco style, the Reverso was adopted by
tastemakers from all walks of life – women as well as men. Before the Reverso’s
first anniversary, feminine models had appeared and further variations
throughout the 1930s reinforced the initial success: different case materials, a
variety of bracelets and straps were proposed.

REVERSO SAC

Not only on the wrist.
Almost immediately, the Reverso became a fashion statement, and various models
were created to offer women alternative ways of wearing it: on the wrist, as a
pendant necklace and, as in this steel example, on a small leather cord to be
attached to a handbag. Also of note is the position of the hours on the dial.

ONE WATCH, TWO EXPRESSIONS OF TIME

Legendary complications.
In 1994, the idea was launched to manufacture a Reverso with two dials back to
back. But how to create a calibre capable of driving two sets of hands arranged
back-to-back, which turn in opposite directions and can be adjusted
independently of each other? The answer is the Reverso Duoface, Jaeger-LeCoultre
Calibre 854. The dial on the front displays local time, while the dial on the
back features another time zone that can be adjusted. Three years later, the
Reverso Duetto, Jaeger-Lecoultre Calibre 844, reinterpreted this concept for
women. While the Reverso Duoface was developed to meet the needs of the
international traveller, the Reverso Duetto was more fashionable and less
hampered by function. It displays the time on both sides, but unlike the Reverso
Duoface it tells the same time but in a different aesthetics.

STORY OF
STYLE & DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

A DISTINCTIVE MODERNITY INSPIRED BY ART DECO

Born at the height of the Art Deco period, the Reverso perfectly epitomised the
spirit of its time. With its uncluttered lines, it never compromised on the core
design elements: the horizontal gadroons that emphasise the rectilinear geometry
of the case, the triangular lugs that appear to be a seamless extension of the
case sides and the case that fits so perfectly into its carrier that, at first
glance, there is no evidence that it can be flipped over.

VANGUARD WATCHES

COLOURED DIALS

The original Reverso models featured silver dials with Arabic numerals but
almost immediately, aesthetic variations began to appear: baton indexes,
different case metals and re-sized models for women.

Perhaps most notable were the coloured dials. Introduced at a time when coloured
dials were rare in watchmaking, made to order dials in bright red,
chocolate brown, burgundy or blue lacquer made the Reverso appear even more
modern and distinctive.

REVERSO DAME

Feminine appeal.
In the changing social milieu of the late 1920s, women had begun to seek greater
autonomy and, when the Reverso was born in 1931, its feminine appeal became
immediately apparent. A new, elongated case was created especially for women
and, as for men, coloured dials could be made to order. Contrasting with the
cool tone of the 18-carat white gold case, this Bordeaux-red lacquer dial is
enhanced by painted golden numerals and indexes, and golden hands. The linear
geometry of the Reverso case is emphasised by painted golden brackets at the
four corners of the dial.

REVERSO CORDONNET

An ode to femininity.
Initially produced in a steel case, the Reverso very soon appeared in gold, or
bi-metallic cases. To complement these different materials and styles, a variety
of bracelets and straps were proposed. Inspired by hand-crafted details found in
Haute Couture, the finely braided cordonnet bracelet (meaning fine cord) was
paired with the Reverso for the first time in 1933. This simple black cord – the
‘little black dress’ of watch bracelets – epitomised the elegant femininity of
the Art Deco period. The silvered dial of this 18-carat gold-and-steel model is
complemented by the hammered texture on the applied golden indexes and hands.

STORY OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

INTRODUCTION

A CANVAS FOR PERSONALISATION, A REALM OF EXPRESSION

A REVERSIBLE BACK: The design of the Reverso had another unexpected benefit.
While its blank metal flip side had begun as a purely functional solution to
avoid damage to the dial, it was an ideal surface for personalisation with
monograms, emblems or personal messages using lacquer, engraving, enamel or
gemstones.

The owner can keep this decoration as a personal, hidden treasure or flip the
case over so that its back becomes the front.

ATELIER DES METIERS RARES

TRADITIONAL KNOW-HOW

Mastering artistic crafts.
In the mid 20th-century, as changing tastes rejected ornamentation, these
traditional artistic crafts began to disappear.

Fortunately, the revival of mechanical watchmaking in the 1990s, sparked a
renewed interest before the crafts were lost forever, and grand feu enamelling
became a signature of the Reverso. Today, with its Atelier des Métiers Rares,
Jaeger-LeCoultre remains one of the very few watchmaking Manufactures to have an
artistic craft workshop under its own roof.

Engraving expertise.
Such was the renown of the Reverso in the 1930s that it became the timepiece of
choice for personalisation by a number of prestigious organisations.
The steel case of this 1934 Reverso bears the hand-engraved and lacquered crest
of the British Racing Drivers Club. Founded in 1928 by a member of the famous
‘Bentley Boys’, who then dominated motor racing, the invitation-only club is
still, to this day, considered to be the most exclusive in motor sport. The case
is fitted with Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 411, the first Reverso movement with
central seconds.

CHAPTER IV
STORY OF INNOVATION

Your browser does not support the video tag.

INTRODUCTION

A RELENTLESS CREATIVITY,
THE SPIRIT OF ANTOINE LECOULTRE

From 1991 onwards, the Reverso became a realm of innovation, perpetuating the
pioneer spirit of Antoine LeCoultre.

As the launch of the Reverso Soixantième in 1991 coincided with the rebirth of
mechanical watchmaking that followed the quartz crisis, the Reverso embraced its
potential to be much more than a time-only watch. It became the vehicle through
which the Manufacture would redevelop its expertise in high complications,
despite the added challenge that rectangular movements dictate : the
architecture is entirely different from the round movements that had
traditionally been used for complications.

1991

REVERSO SOIXANTIEME

In 1991, Jaeger-LeCoultre presented the Reverso Soixantième, the first
complicated Reverso. Although this shaped case had not initially been designed
for complications, the Soixantième revealed its full potential, unleashing a
sequence of pieces that gave new visual expressions to the great watchmaking
complications.

1991 – REVERSO SOIXANTIEME

PERPETUAL INNOVATION

CHANGED YET UNCHANGED

Innovation at heart.
In the years since the Millennium, innovation has continued, highlighting the
pillars of the Grande Maison: Sound Maker, Precision Expertise and Celestial
Complications. From its genesis, through 90 years of evolution and countless
variations, the Reverso has continually reinvented itself without ever
compromising its identity. Versatile and ageless, a chameleon that changes yet
remains unchanged, it has become one of the world’s most recognisable
wristwatches. But it is more than simply a watch. The Reverso has rightly become
recognised as an icon of 20th-century design, in the true meaning of the term.

REVERSO TOURBILLON

First rectangular tourbillon wristwatch.
At a time when tourbillon wristwatches were still extremely rare,
Jaeger-LeCoultre developed its first wristwatch tourbillon movement, the
rectangular Calibre 828, for the Reverso Tourbillon. On the dial side, the
mechanism is concealed beneath the small seconds register at 6 o’clock but when
the case is turned over, the tourbillon is revealed, along with an indicator for
the 40-hour power reserve. The guilloché detail on the dial and the vertical
Côtes de Genève on the pink gold movement plate are testament to the revival of
the traditional decorative crafts during this period.

1994

REVERSO REPETITION MINUTES

Chiming heritage.
Drawing on its unparalleled heritage in chiming watches, Jaeger-LeCoultre
developed its first modern minute repeater for the Reverso. Comprising 306
parts, the manually wound Calibre 943 met a double challenge: first, to adapt
the striking mechanism to conform to the rectangular shape of the Reverso and
second, to miniaturise the complication for a wristwatch movement while
delivering a clearly audible chime. For this Reverso, a solid 18-carat gold back
was chosen over sapphire, due to its superior sound transmission qualities. The
rectilinear case design is complemented by the repeater activation slide
integrated into its side.

NEW LIMITED EDITION

REVERSO TRIBUTE NONANTIEME

The classically elegant aesthetics of the front dial give no hint of the
surprise concealed on the reverse side of the watch. The front dial of the
Nonantième exudes refinement and elegance. The pink gold case with its signature
gadroons frames a silvered, sunray-brushed dial with applied golden indexes and
Dauphine hands. Flipping the case over reveals an entirely new visual expression
of some of watchmaking’s most familiar complications and a digital hour display.
Dramatic and captivating, it is unlike anything seen on a Reverso before.
