development of a strategy, which would be supported by the IDA, to enable people
to remain living in the West while working telecommuting elsewhere including
overseas.


PUBLIC SECTOR DUTY

Explicitly recognise co-operatives in new legislation to ensure the growth and
development of the sector and create a new arm of Enterprise Ireland which would
assist with the development a new generation of co-operative enterprises. Retain
and extend services available at village post offices and retain where feasible
of the village school including looking at creative solutions to challenge
facing small schools including shared administration and transformation to
Gaelscoileanna.

Examine the introduction of a two tier rates structure based on profitability
and size as well as examining the potential of incentives for those who open new
businesses within rural town centres. An end to upward only rent reviews. A

Develop a transport plan for the West that seeks to make public transport and
alternative models of transport a viable option for those living in the region.
Ensure that in rural areas with declining population, profitability should not
be the key consideration regarding investment in transport infrastructure.

Provide a funding package for improving condition of rural roads. Support the
development of Ireland West Airport Knock as a strategically important
international gateway to the Region through the continued growth of the Airport
Replace the current inequitable healthcare system with a universal public health
system, tackling geographic inequalities in health service provision, free at
point of delivery. Address the historic underinvestment in public services in
the west. Protect out of hours doctors services in the West.

Invest in ambulance services, including air ambulance services. Build and

the right to essential social services.

There should also be a specific job creation strategy with targets and
timescales from Údarás na Gaeltachta based on the needs of each island. Maintain
the airlink to the Aran Islands. Create a 29th sub-region, under the Rural
Development Programme, to deal with offshore islands so that those organisations
specifically dealing with the islands unique conditions and circumstances will
be enabled to tender as Local Action Groups under the programme. Deliver
additional capital funding to Údarás na Gaeltachta to create employment and
ensure economic growth in the Gaeltacht.

Also reinstate the direct elections of Udaras board members.

There are 3 ways to get from Dublin to Kinsealy-Drinan by bus, taxi or car

Rielly who lives about a half mile from Kinsealy. He is about eighty years old
and he knows a lot of proverbs. He told me some proverbs and now I shall tell
them to you.

Now I will give you an example of a few about the horse. Once there was a man
and he had a horse.

The winter was in and he had no hay to give to the horse. This day he went out
to the shed and said to the horse, "Live horse and you will get grass. He told

clothes tore and stitches them in time you would say to him, "A stitch in time
saves nine. You would say that because when you stitch anything in time you
would save a lot of time afterwards.

leader of these saints. As you walk down a little road you can see the ruins of
his old chapel. The sea use to come up on the land at the North of Swords. When
St Collmcill there - the land was blank and bare, except a few timber huts. He
left a few fellowes to preach to the pagans in the north County Dublin.

First of all the monastery was built. As went on a town was established. Well it
happened that the monks had a discussion on what they should call the town.
Anyhow the chief monk said that the town should be called after Saint Colmcill.
The monks agreed and ever since then the town was called Swords or Sórd
Colmcille. Sórd is a well of pure water which the monks used to baptise the
pagans.

The well is still to be seen in the ruins. There is a cure for sore eyes in the
well. Old Houses Now my chance has come to tell it to you, and I hope you will
enjoy it. Near our old house there is a house made of straw and clay. The walls
are about four foot thick. The clay and straw were put up with a fork and
thamped down with a mallet. They build up part of a wall and let it dry. Then
the come in another few days and build up the rest of the wall. When the house
was finished they nailed laths on the mud walls.

It was roofed with flaggers first and in time to come it was roofed straw. It
stands about a quarter of a mile from Kinsealy and it is about three centuries
old. A mud house is very comfortable and is also very healthy. The windows are
small because they are afraid that the wall might fall.

The Famine. The great Irish famine occured in the years '46, '47 - caused by the
blight that destroyed the potateo crop in the years '45, ' Of course Kinsealy
was a farming district, and the people had no other food; so the had to depend
on the potatoes.

About one hundred died of hunger, and another hundred were emmigrated to America
and other countries. In these dread famine days a lot of people died in the wood
ditch running along the Malahide Road. More died in the Castle wood. All the mud
houses that were thrown in the past few years is the past result of the famine.
The people were not able to rent and were thrown out on the road to starve.
Another thing was - anyone found out of their house between sunrise and sun-set,
were liable to fourteen years transportation beyond the seas. The people were so
famine-stricken around Kinsealy that one could see them eating grass.

They drew blood of cattle and drank it. They killed the little donkeys, that
served them years on their little farms. When the little ships left Malahide and
Baldoyle with dying passengers on board, they were thrown overboard. These ships
were called coffin ships, Many of these people's bones lie in the bottom of the
Atlantic Ocean all the way to the U,S,A. William Redmond. I hope you would like
to know more of the toys that we Kinsealy boys make. As I mentioned in the last
page about the bow and arrow, and did not tell you how to make or use it.

Now my chance has come to tell you. The boys go through the fields looking for
sally sticks about four foot long. They bring in the sticks and pare them and
get get a strong cord and tie it to the stick. We get a light bit of iron and
bring it to the farrier to put a point on it. The boys go through the fields and
bring some old tins with us and throw at them. They are used mostly in November
and December.

Not only the bow and arrow do we make but snares which we make in the hunting.
Now I will tell you the way to make a snare and how to snare any animal. We get
thich black wire and tie it to a peg and set it on the track. We make a hole in
the wire and put a running knot on it so that when an animal puts his head in
the hole and begins to pull the wire tightens and the animal is snared.

Some other day I might tell you more games and toys. We make a lot of our games
and toys.


RECENT CHANGES

The boys make a lot of bows and arrows and especially fishing rods, which they
make in the summer. Now I shall tell you the way to make a fishing rod and how
