DAVID HAGER LOS ANGELES PLUMBING - HOW TO DEAL WITH ROOT INTRUSION IN YOUR
SEWERS

PLUMBING NEWS

Root intrusion into sewer systems has long been a significant challenge in the
plumbing industry. This issue can lead to blockages, unpleasant odors, slow
drainage, and even system overflows by affecting the sewer system’s hydraulic
capacity. At David Hager Los Angeles, we understand the importance of addressing
these challenges promptly and effectively.

HOW ROOT INTRUSION OCCURS

In older clay sewer lines, sections were connected by inserting a non-bell (hub)
end of one pipe into the hub of the next and filling the gap with concrete. Over
time, the concrete deteriorates, allowing roots to grow through the openings and
expand, damaging the piping. Roots can also infiltrate through partially
collapsed pipes or rotted cast iron.

PREVENTION: A PROACTIVE APPROACH

Prevention is crucial in addressing root intrusion. Proper backfilling during
installation ensures the pipe’s stability and prevents sagging. The
International Plumbing Code outlines guidelines for backfilling, which include
using debris-free earth and tamping it in layers to support the pipe’s
alignment.

According to the International Plumbing Code 306.3 Backfilling: “Backfill shall
be free from discarded construction material and debris. Loose earth free from
rocks, broken concrete and frozen chunks shall be placed in the trench in 6-inch
(152 mm) layers and tamped in place until the crown of the pipe is covered by 12
inches (305 mm) of tamped earth. The Backfill under and beside the pipe shall be
compacted for pipe support. Backfill shall be brought up evenly on both sides of
the pipe so that the pipe remains aligned. In instances where the manufacturer’s
instructions for materials are more restrictive than those prescribed by the
code, the material shall be installed in accordance with the more restrictive
requirement.”

While proper backfilling can help prevent root intrusion, concrete deterioration
or rotted cast iron will eventually allow roots to infiltrate. Untreated root
intrusion can lead to a complete sewer system collapse, necessitating costly
repairs. David Hager Los Angeles offers expert solutions to prevent such costly
outcomes.

MECHANICAL EXTRACTION OF ROOTS

When severe root activity is identified, mechanical removal is necessary. Tools
such as root cutters, cable machines, and jetters are essential for clearing
sewer lines. Using the correct cable and head sizes is critical for effective
cleaning and preventing tool damage or injury.

Snaking the line with a root cutter is a common method. However, it’s important
to use heads and bits designed specifically for root removal. Adjustable heads
can expand to fit the pipe’s diameter, ensuring thorough cleaning.

THE DAVID HAGER LOS ANGELES PLUMBING RECOMMENDATION

Key Considerations for Mechanical Extraction:

 * Proper Cable Size: Using the right cable size prevents tool damage and
injuries. Incorrect sizing can cause the cable to get stuck or whip back.

 * Proper Head Size: The head size must match the pipe diameter for effective
cleaning. Standard sewer lines are typically 3-4 inches in diameter.

 * Maintaining Equipment: Regular maintenance of root-cutting heads and snake
cables is essential. Dull or damaged heads and kinked cables reduce
effectiveness and increase the risk of injury.

Sewer jetting, which uses high-pressure water, is another method for root
removal. It effectively clears root debris left after using a root cutter.

CHEMICAL TREATMENTS

After mechanical removal, chemicals can prevent future root growth. Products
like foaming chemicals and copper sulfate crystals are effective in eliminating
roots and preventing regrowth. Applying treatments such as Root Destroyer at the
root clog’s location can be beneficial, especially when done overnight.

Key Considerations for Chemical Treatments:

 * Safety: Always read and follow safety instructions and use proper personal
   protective equipment (PPE).

 * Legality: Ensure the chemical is legal in your state or county.

 * Proper Application: Apply chemicals correctly to maximize effectiveness and
   minimize risks.

CONCLUSION

Effective root control and preventative maintenance are essential for the
longevity and functionality of sewer systems. Proper backfilling, mechanical
root removal, and strategic use of chemical treatments can prevent root
intrusion, saving homeowners from costly repairs. David Hager Los Angeles is
dedicated to providing comprehensive solutions for root intrusion, ensuring your
sewer systems remain functional and efficient.
