The crisp coolness of an early Spring breeze felt invigorating as it ruffled the man’s hair – only getting past his leather and wool to chill his ears and face. A slight tension was in the air as behind him a large construct of fabric and wood, smelling of oil and petrol, awaited this day of promise. He surveyed the spars and ribs of the wings, laid-out and crafted by his own hands, and noted something out of place – a small piece of gravel had blown onto the tail section. He ran over and carefully brushed aside the coarse bits of sand, and afterwards used a soft cloth to lovingly polish the stretched cloth over the stabilizer. A wooden propeller, carved by his own hands and attached to a small gas engine, silently awaited the command to push the craft forward. Ahead of the craft a stamped down dirt field runway waited patiently for the takeoff run. Yes, the conditions were perfect. His craft was good, and his assistant stood ready. Everything was prepared! Most of this is hopefully quite intuitive to you but, based upon recent experiences, I believe it worthwhile to review how we can create ways that foster productivity – especially for employees whose tasks have a high-degree of complexity. So when thinking about an employee’s need for focus, consider the characteristics of the tasks that the employee typically must do, and then ask a few basic questions like: How long does it take… 1. To prepare to start performing the task? 2. To productively stop performing the task when it is interrupted? I.e. How long does it take to “save my place”, take-notes on where I left-off, …, etc. 3. To restart the task after being… * “Productively” interrupted? I.e. Did I have a chance to reach a good stopping point? * “Unproductively” interrupted? I.e. Was I compelled to “drop everything” and take a different task? If so, then the absence of a “good stopping point” will add to the time required to restart the task. Some tasks like cleaning up my desk or reviewing my “to do” list are relatively simple, and can be safely interrupted without damaging productivity. But the productivity of someone doing complex research, writing, design, or development work can be destroyed by excessive interruptions. In these days when management is under yet more intense pressure to do more with less, it is even more important to know how to get the most out of our teams. No guard rail. No shoulder. Nothing at all, it seemed, between my SUV and the nothingness below. I shuddered as I stole glimpses through wispy clouds of tiny cars and toy buildings in the distant valley. “Tell her to stay on her side…”, I hear as my white-knuckled hands gripped the steering wheel. With constant jabber streaming from my little girls in the back seat, and a bottomless chasm on my right, I struggled to keep focused on the turning-narrow ribbon of road ahead. Oh no! I came out of a switchback in the road and suddenly faced an oncoming truck! I thought, “there is no room for both of us!” To avoid being squashed by the massive knobbies of the huge off-roader, I slowed to a crawl and grudgingly gave away a few more inches of my life. And as the green behemoth passed by excruciatingly slow – almost scraping the side of my overmatched vehicle – I couldn’t tell where my right wheels were – but they were surely about to slip off the edge! Slowly, slowly, slowly… finally. Finally the monstrous 4X4 was past! My heart was pounding out of my chest as I pulled forward and stopped on the left side of the road. Now safely in the shadow of the granite wall rising above me , I caught my breath and thought: “those ‘Maroon Bells’ sure were pretty, but I don’t know if I can handle this drive again!” The above episode – from years ago – was on my return from a camping and sight-seeing trip at the majestic “Maroon Bells” in my adopted state of Colorado, where I live and work. Sometimes I must drive through mountain passes on the way to camping, hiking, cycling, and other serene outdoor activities – which I enjoy immensely. But some mountain-top experiences are not my thing! Read more YODA AND C.S. All his life has he looked away to the future, the horizon. Never his mind on where he was… What he was doing.” This statement could have been said of me. Since I was a young boy, I have always looked to the future, to the point that I have frequently neglected to live in the here and now. But the future is only given to us a piece at a time; it appears to us in the present – the now. In “The Screwtape Letters”, C.S. Lewis wrote: “the Present is the point at which time touches eternity. Of the present moment, and of it only, humans have… freedom… offered them“. We can anticipate the future but, our freedom to operate and to act comes only in the now.
