OVERVIEW

Maritime transport is pivotal to India's trade, accounting for around 95% of the
country’s external trade by volume and 70% by value. India boasts 12 major ports
and more than 200 non-major ports along the 7,500 km-long coastline, playing a
key role in the growth of the country’s economy. The government has prepared the
Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, a comprehensive roadmap for transforming
India’s maritime sector over the next quarter of a century and turn it into a
robust engine of the nation’s development. The Amrit Kaal Vision has identified
11 critical themes together with more than 300 initiatives/actionable points
across ports, shipping and waterways by leveraging the National Logistics Policy
(NLP) and the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP). The 11 themes
cover safe, sustainable and green maritime sector, maritime professional
services, developing world class next generation ports, becoming a global player
in shipbuilding, repairs and recycling, enhancing efficiency through technology
and innovation, enhancing India’s tonnage, expanding modal share of coastal
shipping and inland water transport, promoting ocean, coastal and river cruise
sector, developing world class education, training and research facilities and
promoting maritime clusters.

These themes are aimed at enhancing overall performance and efficiency of the
maritime sector and at unlocking the potential of Blue Economy, making it a
significant contributor to the overall economy. The government’s efforts to
chart a holistic vision for India’s maritime sector presents a multitude of
opportunities for industry stakeholders. The second edition of the ‘Global Ports
