The platform CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that X (formerly Twitter) will begin
charging new users a “small fee” for writing access. Specifically, the SpaceX
founder noted that the charge would be required to do things like post, like,
bookmark, or reply on the platform.

In a reply to the rumors, Musk noted that the decision would be implemented to
combat the “relentless onslaught of bots.” Indeed, he discussed the advances in
AI that have allowed it to pass human checks, as well as an increase in fake
accounts. The proposed fee model would curve these occurrences.

MUSK OUTLINES X’S CONFIRMED FEE FOR NEW USERS

Since he acquired the social media platform in April of 2022, Elon Musk has not
been shy about changing the platform. Indeed, the Tesla CEO has sought to reform
the platform into his image of optimization regarding its capabilities.
Subsequently, it has transformed greatly, most thoroughly in its X rebrand.

Now, there is yet another change that could be a barrier to entry for some.
Specifically, Elon Musk has confirmed that X will begin charging new users a
“Small Fee” for certain actions. In a post to the platform, Musk confirmed the
parameters of what payment of that fee would entail

The rumor was initially posted by X Daily News, who discussed the speculation.
Their post noted the platform would require the fee to “post, like, bookmark,
and reply.” Thereafter, it stated that this would “reduce spam” and create a
“better experience for everyone.”

However, the post also noted that it would still be free to follow accounts and
browse content on the platform. Musk noted that a fee for write access was
unfortunately necessary. Additionally, he noted the increase in fake accounts
“also uses up the available namespace,” with so many handles being taken.



To this point, there is no indication as to what the fee would be. Moreover, the
confirmation did not outline when it would come into effect. Conversely, its
introduction for new users would likely leave existing users unaffected.
