PTS AND OTS: BE PREPARED TO WORK WITH PATIENTS IN THE HOSPITAL DURING HIGH-RISK
PREGNANCY AND RIGHT AFTER BIRTH

TESTIMONIALS

"I really enjoyed this course and it gives me more confidence for my next OB
evaluation." ~ Brittany Oakman

"I attended Introduction to PT and OT for the Acute Postpartum Patient because I
would love to start treating acute pregnant and postpartum patients in my
hospital system. I thought Erin did a great job trying to narrow down the most
important information any PT or OT would need prior to entering a patient's
room." ~ Rebba Maylone, PT, DPT, Certified Birth Doula

COURSE 1: INTRODUCTION TO PT & OT FOR THE ACUTE POSTPARTUM PATIENT

Pelvic health providers have long recognized the reality and escalating severity
of the maternal health crisis in the US. Every day, individuals outside our
specialty are becoming increasingly aware of the challenges faced by so many. As
this awareness spreads, the demand for acute postpartum physical and
occupational therapy is rapidly growing, with hospitals across the nation
offering these services. The care we deliver immediately after birth can be
transformative, even life-saving. If you're a PT or OT working in acute care and
seeking to enhance your proficiency in serving the postpartum population within
a hospital setting, this course is tailored for you!

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

 * The basics of pregnancy physiology, childbirth, and the immediate demands of
   newborn care
 * What to look for in a chart review
 * Performing an acute evaluation and considerations for treatment
 * Common postpartum complications
 * How to design a safe and effective home exercise program for the first 6
   weeks postpartum
 * Case application through small and full group discussions based on Dr.
Locati's experience of working with this population in a large hospital
   system

COURSE 2: ACUTE ANTEPARTUM PT & OT FOR THE HIGH-RISK PATIENT

Few things are scarier than being told you have a complication with your
pregnancy. Even scarier: that the complication is so serious your doctor wants
to admit you to the hospital. The emotional, financial and physical cost of
landing in the hospital during pregnancy multiply over days, weeks and even
months. Physical and occupational therapy have a unique and vital role to play
in helping patients navigate this life-altering time.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

 * The most common pregnancies complications for which patients are admitted to
   the hospital
 * The activity restrictions prescribed for these complications
 * The implications of hospitalization for patients and their families and what
PTs and OTs can offer this population including:
   * coping strategies, psychosocial support and problem solving
   * managing acute pain
   * creating safe movement and exercise programs
   * preparation for birth and postpartum
 * Case application through small and full group discussions based on Dr.
Locati's experience of working with this population in a large hospital
   system
