ALERT FOR U.S. CITIZENS: MASAYA VOLCANO ACTIVITY

U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua
Alert for U.S. Citizens

March 12, 2024

Location: Masaya, Nicaragua

Event: Masaya Volcano Activity: Landslides in the Santiago Crater of Masaya
Volcano have covered the active lava lake with debris, blocked volcanic gas
release, and increased the potential for moderate explosions that could pose
risk to visitors near the summit and adjoining areas of Volcan Masaya National
Park.  Volcan Masaya National Park is currently closed.
With the lava lake covered and gas release reduced, there is a potential for
explosive activity at the summit. A similar situation in 2012 resulted in a
series of explosions that rained debris over the visitor car parking lot and
viewing area of the Santiago Crater.

ACTIONS TO TAKE:

 * Avoid travel to Volcan Masaya National Park and any restricted areas around
   Masaya Volcano.
 * Monitor updates from local authorities: INETER  and SINAPRED .
 * The status of Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in Managua is
   available at https://www.eaai.com.ni/en .
