INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL RELIABILITY

31st January 2024 - 10:00-17:00 GMT

Summary

Date & Time

31st January 2024 - 10:00-17:00 GMT

Available on Demand?

Until 7th February 2024

Location

Online

Price

£240+VAT

The goal of structural reliability analysis is to identify and quantify the
risks associated with structural failure, and to design and maintain structures
in a way that minimizes those risks. This is important for ensuring the safety
of the public and the functionality of critical infrastructure, as well as for
minimizing the costs associated with structural failure and maintenance.

This course is intended for any civil or structural engineer interested in
developing a basic understanding of structural reliability, and a deeper insight
into the probability of failure of structures.

Morning Session

1. A review of the concepts of structural safety and reliability.
2. Random variables within the context of basic structural reliability analysis
& how to estimate probability of structural failure.
3. Examples demonstrating the application of structural reliability concepts.

Afternoon Session

1. Introduction to First Order Reliability Method (FORM) and its application for
estimating the probability of structural failure (with numerical example).
2. The background behind simulation methods, including Monte Carlo simulation,
will be briefly presented. 3. Limit state codes and partial factors.
4. Reliability-based design and code calibration.

Throughout the day there will be regular refreshment breaks and a 1 hour lunch
break, during which the lecturer will be available for additional Q&A sessions.

PREVIEW COURSE SLIDES

PRESENTERS

Dr Boulent Imam is a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering Structures at the
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the University of Surrey
and Programme Director for the MSc Programme in Bridge Engineering.

He has been extensively involved in the area of fatigue of bridges, carrying out
research in this area collaborating with national and European infrastructure
owners and managers, such as Network Rail, Highways England, TWI. His research
has contributed towards in-depth understanding of the fatigue behaviour of
riveted railway bridges and developed methods for more reliable quantification
of their remaining fatigue life taking into account historical rail traffic,
novel fatigue assessment methods, loading, resistance and modelling
uncertainties as well as system effects.

Later on, Dr imam extended his work on fatigue towards developing fracture
mechanics guidelines for the assessment of fatigue crack growth in steel bridge
details towards the optimisation of inspection and maintenance planning in steel
bridges. Recently, Dr Imam research has expanded towards understanding the
potential impacts of climate change on bridge deterioration and quantifying the
resilience of bridge infrastructure against extreme events.

The format of this event will be a webinar using "Zoom Webinars".

There will be opportunity to interact with the lecturer throughout the session,
both though allocated Q&A sessions, or leaving text based questions throughout
the presentation which the lecturer will be able to answer at convenient
opportunities.

TESTIMONIALS

THE TOP SCORE IS 5. I WOULD HAVE GIVEN THE LECTURER A 10 IF I COULD. STRUCTURAL
RELIABILITY IS SEEN AS COMPLEX AND MYSTERIOUS. NOT ANY MORE. HIS EXPLANATION WAS
CLEAR AND COMPREHENSIVE. YES THERE IS SOME FANCY MATH'S, BUT I UNDERSTAND WHAT
IT IS TRYING TO DO NOW. THANK YOU.

OVERALL, VERY GOOD CONTENT - I GOT OUT WHAT I WAS HOPING FOR AND MORE.

THE PACE OF THE MATERIAL WAS JUST RIGHT TO UNDERSTAND THIS COMPLEX SUBJECT.
THE MATERIAL AND EXAMPLES GAVE AN INSIGHT INTO HOW TO BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND AND
APPLY THE METHODS SHOWN.
