EXPECT DELAYS ON ROUTE 3 NEAR CHANCELLORSVILLE SEPT. 13-16 IN SPOTSYLVANIA
COUNTY

Travelers are encouraged to allow extra travel time or use alternate routes as
crews complete the rapid culvert installation during the extended weekend
operation

Fredericksburg District

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Starting on the evening of Friday, Sept. 13, travelers can
expect delays near Chancellorsville in Spotsylvania County as Route 3 westbound
will be closed for a rapid culvert installation at Lick Run.

At 9 p.m. Friday, westbound Route 3 traffic will be shifted to travel in the
Route 3 eastbound lanes, with one travel lane open in each direction. Route 3
will remain reduced to a single eastbound and westbound lane over the weekend.
All lanes will reopen by noon Monday, Sept. 16.

Eastbound Route 3 will be reduced to a single lane in the work zone starting at
5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13 to allow crews to install temporary pavement markings
needed for the weekend work zone.

Due to the condition of the existing bridge over Lick Run, which was built in
1932, the bridge will be replaced with a 36-foot-long, 12-foot-wide, and
8-foot-high concrete box culvert. A rapid installation over an extended weekend
was chosen to minimize disruption to travelers over several days instead of
several months of overnight lane closures.

While Route 3 eastbound and westbound will remain open during Sept. 13-16,
travelers are encouraged to allow extra travel time or use alternate routes.

The following backup dates will be used if the planned weekend is canceled for
inclement weather:

 * 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 through noon Monday, Sept. 23
 * 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 through noon Monday, Sept. 30

Message boards will be posted ahead of the closure to notify motorists.

The Route 3 westbound closure will start just before the crossover in front of
the Spotsylvania County Museum and end past the crossover in front of the
Spotsylvania County Fire Station 5. Single lane closures will extend past the
crossovers in both directions to get the eastbound lanes down to one lane each
way.

Emergency responders will be provided immediate access to pass through the work
zone during the weekend operation.

Once the culvert is installed, travelers can expect periodic single lane
closures to continue for paving and other final construction activities through
November 2024, when the project will be finished. Crews will reconstruct the
crossovers in front of Spotsylvania County Museum and immediately west of Lick
Run and reopen them to traffic.

During the reconstruction of the crossovers, motorists traveling on westbound
Route 3 seeking to U-turn after the Spotsylvania County Museum should proceed to
the Montpelier Drive/Glade Drive crossover to reach Route 3 eastbound. Motorists
traveling on Route 3 eastbound seeking to U-turn after the Spotsylvania Fire
Station 5 should proceed to the crossover just beyond the Battlefield Country
Store to reach Route 3 westbound.

This $4.1 million project is funded through state bridge funds.

The project contractor is Sagres Construction.

The Route 3 eastbound bridge over Lick Run is not scheduled for a bridge
replacement as it was built in 1963 and remains in satisfactory condition.

Route 3 westbound carries approximately 35,000 vehicles a day in the project
limits, according to a 2023 VDOT traffic count.
