Hi, I'm Gabriel...!

          ...and before I started my journey of helping others learn math, I
actually struggled with it. I’ve even taken a math class twice... TWICE! One of
those times was how I first experienced the power of math coaching.

          I was a freshman in college taking calculus for the second time after
getting a B in it in HS. And 2-3 times a week, I would hang out in the lobby of
one of the dorms with a couple of my friends who were also in calculus, and I
would coach them as they worked on their homework, since I’d already taken this
subject in high school. As the semester went on, the group grew to average 6-10
students - every one of them there because I already knew the material and was
willing to coach them whenever they got stuck. My favorite testimonial from that
group is from one student who was a math studies major that then went on to
teach math at one of the top private schools in Houston.

          What I had unknowingly uncovered was what I now call math coaching,
although I didn’t quite grasp the difference between math coaching and other
math education at that time. I then went on to graduate with a B.S. in Math
Education and jumped right into teaching. I taught at both public schools and
private schools for a few years, then went into tutoring. I owned my own
tutoring business with my wife, but I still felt like I wasn’t truly able to
help students the way I wanted to. It wasn’t until a few years later, after some
reflection, that I realized “math coaching” was really what students needed. I’m
now incredibly happy to be doing something that I love and am passionate about
while supporting myself, my wife, and two children.

         …It’s kinda like coaching sports, but for math! And why exactly do we
believe that math coaching is the best way to learn math? For starters, I think
everyone unanimously agrees that practice is the only way to get better at
anything. Do you remember the saying “practice makes perfect”? Well it’s
actually only sort of true. Because only perfect practice makes perfect. And if
you're like me, you probably don’t want the results that comes when you practice
doing something the wrong way (which are the results many students get when
working on math homework). So I think it’s safe to say that practice without a
coach isn’t always good practice. That’s why having an expert coach with you
while you are practicing any new skill is a guaranteed way to master it. It’s
literally what ALL the best pros in every profession do.

 It's how they got/get
to the top!

         Let me ask you a question — when is getting better at something the
hardest? Answer: when you don’t have someone nearby who can help you when you
get stuck. I figured that out after reflecting on my athletic experiences as a
hurdler during high school and college. You see, from the time I was a sophomore
in high school, until I was a sophomore in college, I always had a hurdling
coach. And every year I got better at it, I got faster… that is until I went
through my 2nd year of college, because my college hurdle coach had moved on to
a work at a different school, unfortunately the role he left wasn’t ever really
filled during the rest of my athletic career. This resulted in my stagnation as
a hurdler. In the absence of a dedicated hurdle coach, I became a sort of coach
to the other younger hurdlers. And obviously they improved but that’s not as a
testament to how good I was at coaching, it was due to the fact that they had a
coach at all. I’m telling you this story, to help you understand why I don’t
call myself a teacher or a tutor anymore, because the times when a math expert
is needed most is during the practice time. 



         After reflecting on those experiences I learned that practice with an
expert is the best way to get better at anything, because people learn better
and faster when they’re practicing the right things in the right way… and that
combination happens best in math with a math coach ✅ and AI-based math practice.

         ...It’s kinda like a personalized workout and diet plan that gives the
best and fastest result that your specific body type can have… but in/for/with
math. If math coaching helps you practice in the right way, AI-based practice
makes sure you are practicing the right things at the right time. Personalized
math practice is how you succeed in math even if you’re bad at it.



         Back when I was teaching, I was preparing my syllabus before the 2016
school year and found out that my school had access to an AI-based math practice
software that would not only give students homework problems that I assigned to
them, but it could also teach additional topics to the students if they were
ready to learn those new topics. Additionally, it could provide them with
personalized and randomized problems to help them master the new topics. Once I
realized that it would also avoid introducing those students to new topics they
weren’t ready for, I knew I had to try it with my classes. So I did, and I saw
amazing results. In fact, one student in particular that was struggling with
basic arithmetic while in my high school Geometry class was able to grow by
leaps and bounds because the AI software would only give him math he was ready
to learn. Similarly, my very bright students were able to learn at lightning
speed (learning everything in the textbook a whole 2 months before the end of
the school year). 



         What I learned was that this type of AI-based, personalized math
practice works for any student, with the only variable being the speed at which
they learn, and that was decided by their current ability, the amount of
practice they were putting in, and if they had expert help whenever they did get
stuck. In fact, students would learn an average of 3-10 new topics in an hour of
focused work! Because of this experience, I learned two things. First, a person
was only bad at something until they practiced it enough to get good at it.
Second, AI has changed the game and is the best way to personalize and optimize
ones practice for just about anything, and especially when you couple it with
math coaching!
