It is 220 miles north-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Saturday that it could strengthen into a hurricane and bring the risk of life-threatening impacts to portions of Florida’s west coast next week. Hurricane and storm surge watches are likely to be issued Sunday. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 35 counties ahead of the storm’s potential landfall. Many of those counties are still recovering from Hurricane Helene. So DeSantis has asked the Florida Division of Emergency Management and the Florida Department of Transportation to supplement local communities as they expedite debris removal.
