VIDEO: VULNERABILITY ISN’T A DIRTY WORD

Vulnerability hasn’t gotten a very good rap in the past. Just think of the
definition. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, vulnerability means
“capable of being physically or emotionally wounded or open to attack or
damage.” That’s not exactly an adjective phrase you’d want to use to describe
yourself in the workplace.

But let’s take another look at what vulnerability means in the workplace.

Beyond the Dictionary
Research has shown that when we feel a connection with another person, we
respond positively to that person. When you and your teammates are vulnerable
with each other and willing to show your true selves in the workplace, all of
you feel more connected to each other. So when a teammate to whom you feel
connected asks you to rush a report to them, you try harder to do so and are
kinder to them.

Author Brené Brown, Ph.D., the author of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be
Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, defines
vulnerability as “uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.” She says it’s the
willingness to show up and be seen, even when there are no guarantees.

In her book, Brown reveals the following three myths about vulnerability:

 
Myth 1: Showing vulnerability is a weakness.
Ironically we are drawn to others who are willing to be open and honest with us,
but when it’s our turn to show vulnerability, we tend to see it as a sign of
weakness. Being vulnerable, however, helps us to connect with others and to
experience emotion naturally.
 
Myth 2: Some people are never vulnerable.
Being vulnerable isn’t a choice, but how we respond when faced with risk,
uncertainty, and emotional exposure certainly is. The majority of us attempt to
flee vulnerable moments, and when we do, we show behaviors that likely don’t
align with who we want to be.
 
Myth 3: Vulnerability means we have to spill our guts.
We mistakenly assume that being vulnerable means we have to reveal everything.
But that is simply not true. Vulnerability means sharing our true feelings and
experiences with people who have earned that right.

Watch: In this video, Brown elaborates on more myths about vulnerability and
provides some tips for being vulnerable ourselves.

Reflect: At first, when practicing vulnerability, it may feel uncomfortable.
Observe what you’re feeling when you are vulnerable. Does it affect you
physically? What are your thoughts, feelings, and emotions?
