Just hours after the last order was served, crews began deconstructing and
painting the former Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q restaurant on Airport
Boulevard. Christopher Long | Times

Just hours after the restaurant served its last order, work crews began painting
the brick exterior and dismantling light fixtures inside Smithfield’s Chicken ’N
Bar-B-Q on 2207 Airport Blvd. NW Monday to make way for a new restaurant.

The restaurant’s sudden closure surprised many who discussed the closure in
social media posts. Smithfield’s Vice President Junius Moore told the Times the
building sale was what prompted the quick move.

“We made the decision to sell this property to another brand — Alpaca,” Moore
said Monday afternoon. “Yesterday was our last day of operation, and we started
to dismantle everything today.”

Alpaca is a Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken restaurant based almost entirely
in the Raleigh-Durham area, with restaurants also located in Wilmington and
Fayetteville. The chicken chain serves made-to-order plates, chicken combos and
daily specials. The Times has reached to Alpaca for comment.

Moore said despite closing the business, he hopes to see the brand stay local.

“We are interested in relocating (in Wilson),” Moore said. “We’d like to find a
site with some better access. Wilson’s a great market, just this particular
location a franchisee did and the company acquired it when he got out. We just
decided to let this particular location go.”

Moore said the company has some general locations in mind but has not bought a
new property yet.

“We’ll have to explore it a little more,” Moore said. “There’s some potential
possibilities on (Interstate) 95 and (U.S. Highway) 301. That might be some
places we look at, but we are very interested in relocating in town.

“Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign Lord, as you
have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen
your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for
revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”” -Luke 2:28-32
