We’ve got your back! Our SpiceWorld team has created a customizable template you can use to help prove the value of attending the conference. This form letter has everything: bullet-listed prices, links to hotel deals, and professional-sounding verbs. You’re a shoe-in with this in your arsenal. So, I guess I’ll see you in Austin - just look for the fatally-sweaty pale guy in an orange shirt! Just copy/paste from below, or click right here Opens a new window to automatically download a PDF. _________________________________________________________________________ Dear [your manager’s name], I’d like your permission to attend SpiceWorld 2023 in Austin, TX. It’s an invaluable, in-person event that offers live events, workshops, and vendor interaction. The event takes place September 5-7 at the Austin Convention Center. Here’s a link to this year’s SpiceWorld agenda. SpiceWorld 2023 even offers special rates at hotels that are within walking distance/near the convention center. There are also early bird discounts for registration, which are broken down below: * $499 through 8/3 * $749 through 9/3 * $799 after 9/3 * $149 guest pass (welcome event, conference party, happy hours) As you can see, if I can register before August 3rd, we will save up to $300 off the full conference registration cost! Attending Spiceworld 2023 will be beneficial for my personal and professional growth, as well as building our IT team’s knowledge. Some of the benefits include: * Over 60 Tech sessions covering IT topics such as: * Networking * Security * Cloud * Virtualization * PowerShell, and more! * Keynote sessions by thought leaders in various fields * Unmatched in-person networking In addition to education sessions, conference-goers get the opportunity to learn about products and trends from top tech brands exhibiting at the show, such as chromeOS, LastPass, CompTIA, baramundi, ninjaOne, and Eaton. After attending SW23, I/we/our team will be able to offer a breakdown of sessions and what we learned about any trending or relevant information/solutions. Thank you for considering my request and I look forward to your reply, [your name & awesomely-spicy title] Spice (43) Reply (22) flagReport Chad (SWZD) This person is a verified professional. I sincerely hope others can use this to their advantage. I think I used this the first year to send to the President of my company and he was ALWAYS game for anything like this or education. My current situation, same company, is different now. :-( Spice (5) flagReport Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down * HulkSmash72 This person is a verified professional. I am denying your request. Everything that you cite - vendor interaction, training, and hands-on sessions - has been available here in the office and with local vendors. Despite this, you have failed to take any advantage of these in-house opportunities over the past year. Not once, to the best of my recollection, have you demonstrated an interest in researching a new product or briefing our team on some techniques that may improve our ability to perform our jobs. Not once, that is, until it involves an interstate trip, paid hotel and meals, and "conference party, happy hours." Our employment agreement is a value-for-value exchange. If you desire to increase the amount of value the company gives to you, I'd suggest that you work on ways to increase the value you give to the company. I'll watch your performance, initiative, and contributions over the next year. If you demonstrate an abiding effort to self-educate, interact with vendors, and increase the technology awareness of the team, we can discuss "SpiceWorld" then. I needed a template to respond to staff sending me requests to attend another boondoggle so they can bring home tchotchkes to clutter their desks. One week it's whining about no longer being able to work from home and how they have sick kids and the office is too hot, and the next they want to go to Texas in September at the peak of back to school, stay in hotels, and want $149 for rail drinks and domestic beer. I can't even get $500 approved for licenses we actually need to do business since our revenues are down with the economy. Helps a lot. :) Spice (1) flagReport Was this post helpful? thumb_up thumb_down * Robert5205 pure capsaicin Aug 3rd, 2023 at 1:43 AM > DZee wrote: > > Thanks, Robert. > > I needed a template to respond to staff sending me requests to attend > another boondoggle so they can bring home tchotchkes to clutter their > desks. > > One week it's whining about no longer being able to work from home and how > they have sick kids and the office is too hot, and the next they want to go > to Texas in September at the peak of back to school, stay in hotels, and > want $149 for rail drinks and domestic beer. > > I can't even get $500 approved for licenses we actually need to do business > since our revenues are down with the economy. > > Helps a lot. :) Not sure if you're serious.... A lot of folks posts how they get denied. My goal was to, perhaps, give them some insight into how a manager might see the request if it comes out of the blue. If they're one of those people who is always going the extra mile at work, a request like this is more likely to be well received. If not, the power to change how they are perceived by management is within their power. It may not always change the result, but it certainly can remove a roadblock. To convince the company to send you, you need to demonstrate that there is business value to the company for having you attend. This includes things like representing the company if you are speaking at one of the breakout sessions (marketing advantage), pointing out specific sessions or vendors that relate to an ongoing or future project the company has (like PowerShell sessions that are related to the company's automation initiative), or listing specific examples of how previous conferences have helped the organization (for example, I ran into the CommQuotes booth when we were in the middle of phone system project, and we ended up going with the solution they proposed). I'm just parodying some of the the attitudes I've heard from other executives (especially company owners) about requests like these. The next week, they're on a plane to a conference themselves. I did make it more contemporary by weaving in the bits about work from home and current economic conditions which probably made it a little to believable.
