Health is more than the absence of illness—it's the whole story of well-being for our minds, bodies, and communities. That's why we built this State Health Assessment (SHA) dashboard. By assessing the current status of health across the state, we can work together to create plans that improve well-being at every scale. No matter who or where we are, the situations we're in throughout life all shape our health. What we can afford, how safe our neighborhoods are, and how easy or difficult it is to get medical care all affect the opportunities we have to make healthy choices. This dashboard explains how health in Louisiana requires a solid community foundation. We'll begin by exploring the factors that affect our choices in the Foundations of Community Health section. The second section will explain how our communities influence our Behaviors and Exposures. Finally, we'll review the Medical Conditions that result from the foundations of health, our behaviors, and the things we are exposed to in life that define good or poor health. Each section is available for the whole state and for the nine public health regions. Both state and local data can be useful when planning to improve health in your community. * Link to this component Anchor link Copied! We all grow, live, work, learn, and play surrounded by resources and relationships that affect our opportunities and choices. For example, when we struggle to afford safe housing, we focus on meeting that basic need over other things, like healthy food or preventive medical care. We make choices based on the opportunities available in our community, like whether or not quality jobs are available. This dashboard refers to the factors that affect opportunity from the ground up as the Foundations of Community Health. Like the foundation of a house, sound community health requires a strong foundation. Intervening here can prevent health issues in a community before they even begin. The next step in this journey is our Behaviors and Exposures. Our behaviors are our personal choices, and exposures are the things we come in contact with which may not be in our control. Based on the circumstances created by the foundations of community health, we start to make choices. Stressed by financial concerns created by low-wage employment, do we go to the fast food place down the street, or travel ten plus miles to the nearest grocery store to buy fruits and vegetables we then have to prepare? Over time, exposures and behaviors reinforce barriers or opportunities created by foundations of community health. Finally, we have Medical Conditions. Medical conditions are a sign that the foundation of health in our community needs attention. Based on the options available in our communities, the choices we make, and our exposure to risks, what kind of health outcomes are we experiencing? Who is healthy? Who is ill? And how are health and illness affected by our experience in the community? A house can weather almost any storm if it stands on a solid foundation. We can be healthy and resilient when we build strong foundations for health in our communities. We can make better community health inevitable through policies and interventions. The further upstream we aim our efforts, the better our whole community’s health will be. INDIVIDUALLY, WE STRIVE TO MAKE THE BEST CHOICES FOR OURSELVES AND OUR LOVED ONES. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE SURE THE HEALTHIEST CHOICES ARE THE EASIEST CHOICES FOR ALL LOUISIANANS. * Link to this component * Share this via email * Share this on Facebook * Share this on Twitter * Share this on LinkedIn Empowered by mySidewalk Terms of Use By using this site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Privacy Policy, and our Terms of Use.
