LAPTOP WONT CONNECT TO PROJECTOR HDMI TO DVI

I can't actually guarantee that the adapter is working, but as it is new and
there is some sort of connection going on I get the feeling that this is more
than just that. Connecting the adapter to the TV and then the HDMI cable between
the two only manages to put the TV into DPM mode, a power saving mode for when
PC's are on standby.

None of the laptops in the house can connect to it and nor can the xbox. It has
a DVI port, so I assumed all I would need is an adapter to be able to connect a
desktop/laptop/xbox to it, but since the adapter came I've been having no luck
with it. It's a bit of an old TV but it is (should be) 720p and fine for my
needs.
