Moreover, Turkey and China covers how these two countries have reacted to each other over sensitive issues including Turkey's relation with Taiwan and China's policies towards the Turkic Uyghurs. The book is of interest to diplomats, journalists, students, and researchers working on Turkish foreign policy, Turkish-Asian affairs, and Chinese strategies in the Middle East." Asian Affairs What are the dynamics of the relationship between Turkey and China? How is the Sino-Turkish cooperation affected by other large regional powers? Are Turkey and China compatible enough to sustain a strong and steady relationship in a turbulent future? The relationship between the Republic of Turkey and the People's Republic of China has had many ups and downs from 1949 to the present day. At the start of the Cold War, Turkey diplomatically recognized only the Republic of China (Taiwan) like its NATO allies. Following the Sino-American normalization in 1971, Ankara established diplomatic relations with Beijing and ceased contact with Taipei. Since then, relations between Turkey and China have grown steadily with some setbacks. Turkey and China analyses Turkey–China relations from political, economic, strategic, and cultural perspectives. Turkey's policies towards Taiwan and the Uyghur cause are covered from the beginning. The Sino-Turkish cooperation on the economy, trade, the defence industry, energy, and nuclear technology are also elaborated. Crucially, the Silk Road partnership in the context of China's Belt and Road Initiative and Turkey's Middle Corridor has a deep-rooted focus alongside future perspectives. Finally, the roles of other actors — particularly the United States and Russia — in Sino-Turkish relations have a primary focus, further clarified by the impact of international organizations and forums like the United Nations, NATO, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the European Union, the G20, and BRICS. There is no commonly accepted definition of what an emerging or rising power is. Growing economic size, potential military and political-power resources, a reasonable degree of internal cohesion, ambition and some ability to contribute to the generation of a revised international order are generally used to identify emerging or rising powers… No Access CHAPTER 2: TURKEY’S RELATIONS WITH THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA ON TAIWAN (1949–1971) * Pages:7–22 https://doi.org/10.1142/9781786349538_0002 * Abstract * PDF/EPUB Preview Abstract Turkey’s policy towards the ROC or Nationalist China and the PRC or Communist China can be classified in two categories as the 1950s and the 1960s. First, because of the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in 1991 and the achieving of independence of the Turkic and Muslim majority nations of the Balkans, Caucasus, and Central Asia, Ankara prioritized its relations with those newly independent nations. Turkey had oriented itself to its geographically adjacent regions such as the Balkans, the Black Sea nations, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, i.e. Central Eurasia. Making use of its cultural and historical ties with these regions, Turkey aspired to increase its influence in the region stretching from the Balkans to China… No Access CHAPTER 5: ANKARA’S BEIJING FIRST POLICY (1997–2009) * Pages:55–69 https://doi.org/10.1142/9781786349538_0005 * Abstract * PDF/EPUB Preview Abstract After the coalition government consisting of the Islamist Refah Party and centre-right DYP stepped down on 30 June 1997 because of heavy pressure from the ultra-secular establishment, including the military, Ankara had fully adopted a pro-Beijing policy outlined by the Turkish MFA and the TSK. The newly formed coalition government consisted of centre-right ANAP, centre-left DSP and the Democrat Turkey Party (DTP), a splinter group from the DYP, had followed a Beijing-leaning policy for Taiwan and the Uyghur cause. The pro-Beijing policy of Ankara had been continued by subsequent governments, by the coalition consisting of the DSP, the ANAP and the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP under the leadership of Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit from June 1999 to November 2002 and initially centre-right the Justice and Development Party, or AKP under the leadership of Prime Minister Abdullah Gül and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from November 2002 to July 2009… No Access CHAPTER 6: ADJUSTING TURKEY’S RELATIONS WITH CHINA (2010–2020) * Pages:71–104 https://doi.org/10.1142/9781786349538_0006 * Abstract * PDF/EPUB Preview Abstract The following sections are included: * Establishing Sino-Turkish Strategic Cooperation * Intensified Military-to-Military Relations * Deepening Economic Partnership * Increasing Chinese Cultural Influence over Turkey * The Uyghur Issue: From the Syrian War to Re-education Camps in Xinjiang * Turkey’s Cautious but Steady Economic Relations with Taiwan No Access CHAPTER 7: SILK ROAD COOPERATION * Pages:105–131 https://doi.org/10.1142/9781786349538_0007 * Abstract * PDF/EPUB Preview Abstract Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, many initiatives have been put forward with the aim of integrating Central Asia into the global community. In this sense, different actors have developed their own initiatives under different names, whether it be Turkey’s “Middle Corridor”, China’s “Belt Road Initiative”, the United States’ “New Silk Road” or the European Union’s “Silk Wind”. Russia, who wants to maintain its influence in Central Asia in the post-Soviet era, has come to successfully develop and implement the “Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)”. Moreover, Turkey and China covers how these two countries have reacted to each other over sensitive issues including Turkey's relation with Taiwan and China's policies towards the Turkic Uyghurs. The book is of interest to diplomats, journalists, students, and researchers working on Turkish foreign policy, Turkish-Asian affairs, and Chinese strategies in the Middle East." Asian Affairs "As Selçuk Çolakoğlu indicates, Turkey and China are two emerging powers of different dimensions.
