BROKEN RECORDS, BUZZER-BEATERS HEADLINE TUESDAY’S KALAMAZOO-AREA PREP HOOPS

KALAMAZOO, MI – A thrilling finish in Mattawan and a dominant performance in
White Pigeon made for an exciting Tuesday of high school basketball across the
Kalamazoo area.

One of the first buzzer-beaters of the young season came off the hands of
Kalamazoo Loy Norrix’s James Rocco, who tipped the ball in the basket with 1.3
seconds left in the fourth quarter to give the Knights a 66-65 lead over
Mattawan in their season opener.

Senior Kevin Lucas and sophomore Cedric Huntley led Loy Norrix with 14 points
apiece to lead the Knights to their first opening-night win since 2017.

On the small-school circuit, White Pigeon’s Dylan Carper set a school record and
stamped his name in the MHSAA record book with 13 steals in a 72-25 win over
Marcellus, falling just one steal shy of the single-game state record set by
Galesburg-Augusta’s Trevor Patterson in 2018 and Morrice’s Zack Markell in 2010.

Carper also scored 16 points in the decisive victory, while Daniel Jackson led
the Chiefs with 20 points, followed by Chris Jackson’s 17 and 15 rebounds.

White Pigeon also moves to 1-0, and they’ll look to keep rolling Thursday at
Centreville.

Loy Norrix’s late win and Carper’s school-record performance weren’t the only
notable accomplishments from Tuesday, so follow along for more scores, stats and
highlights from a busy night of Kalamazoo-area high school basketball.

Gull Lake sophomore Tyler Corstange (4) prepares for his free-throw attempt
against Portage Central during the second quarter at Gull Lake High School in
Richland, Michigan on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020.Joel Bissell | MLive.com

Gull Lake’s Corstange goes for 28 in win over Portage Central

Richland Gull Lake moved to 2-0 thanks to a big game from senior Tyler
Corstange, who poured in 28 points in the Blue Devils’ 64-48 win over Portage
Central.

Gull Lake trailed 26-23 at halftime, but the 6-foot-1 shooting guard scored 16
in the second half, as did senior Nathan Louden, who finished with 20 points.

After missing last season with a broken finger, Louden has emerged as primary
scoring threat alongside Corstange and has helped fill the production void left
by class of 2021 all-state point guard Caleb Taylor.

The 6-foot-3 Louden is averaging 21.5 points per game through Gull Lake’s first
two contests, and the Blue Devils will need him to step up once again in
Thursday’s showdown with Kalamazoo Central, which also sits at 2-0 in the early
season.

Whitmore leads Delton Kellogg in second game back from injury

After missing the season opener with an injury, Delton Kellogg star point guard
Alden Whitmore made his debut last week in a one-point loss to
Galesburg-Augusta, and though he scored 13 points in the 36-35 defeat, it was
only a warm-up for his second outing of his senior campaign.

Whitmore scored 32 points, including a 9 of 11 mark at the foul line, to lead
the Panthers to a 61-46 win over Constantine and give Delton Kellogg its first
victory of the season.

Constantine cut Delton Kellogg’s lead to 45-43 early in the fourth quarter, but
the Panthers went on a 10-0 run to create some separation.

Sophomore Torren Mapes scored a career-high nine points and played lockdown
perimeter defense to help spark Delton Kellogg’s late run.

Lucas Hagenbuch led Constantine with 18 points, and fellow junior Dean Topolski
added 16 for the Falcons, who fell to 0-3.

Constantine looks to snap its losing streak Friday against Coloma, while Delton
Kellogg looks for win No. 2 Friday against Kalamazoo Christian.
