There are multiple sources of toxic emissions in buildings, most of which are poorly regulated. These include the emission from building materials, furnishings, paints, solvents, cleaning materials, cooking and various consumables. This Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Toolkit enables the air quality within different settings to be assessed and determine the risk of people’s exposure. Currently, the IAQ Toolkit focuses on childcare, educational and elderly care settings, since the users of these settings represent those most vulnerable of health effects. HOW TO FILL OUT THE FORM The IAQ Toolkit is an online form for each setting. Simply click the button below to get started. The toolkit will take you through a series of pages where you will need to enter information on: * The setting's rooms * People who operate in the setting * Where they go within the setting * How long they spend in each room * Which activities and behaviours they enact in each room Each page of the form will have a question, from which you choose a single answer. You may need to repeat the process several times to ensure all details are entered. Once finished, you will be asked to check and confirm if the information you have entered is correct. At this stage, you can go back and edit your selections if needed. NECESSARY INFORMATION Before you complete this form make sure you have: * Checked if you require permission to complete the form and obtained it, if required * Gathered the supporting information you need to help fill in the form It is recommended that you walk around the entire building making notes of what potential sources of pollution there are in each room (e.g. oven in kitchen), what types of ventilation are used in each room (e.g. air conditioning, openable windows). In addition, it is often useful to have to hand the following information: * A simple plan of the building, labelling each room (no need to know room sizes) * A list of roles of people who enter the building (such as children, nursery worker, cleaner - details of individuals not needed) WHAT YOU WILL GET AT THE END Once the form is completed, the IAQ Toolkit will produce a certificate setting out the rating for your setting, a list of recommended measures that you could look to implement to improve your setting’s indoor air quality, and details of potential funding opportunities to support you with implementing the recommended measures. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT You can then contact Warrington Borough Council’s Health Protection team to discuss funding and further support.
