bullied and rejected.

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT AND ALIENATE PEOPLE REVIEWS

 * Jules (Never enough time to read)

It was an easy read with some witty banner, but I didn't care all that much
for any of the main characters as they were all a bit too hard to like.

How to Lose Weight and Alienate People - this title is extremely catchy and
   when I read the
synopsis I thought it is very promising. It looks like more authors are
interested in dispelling the myth created by media that only being slim and
size 0 is a way to live and be happy. Because our main character Vivian is a
total opposite of this stereotype. She's slim, she won the battle with her
compulsive overeating but is she happy? I wouldn't say so.

Vivian is a hostess, although she's in fact an actress, out of job right now.
She prides herself to be very slim, not to leave house without three cm make
   - up on her face and have her life under control. But those are only
delusions. In fact she's still dealing with her past, when, after discovering
her father had had an affair, ...

Ollie Quain's debut novel How To Lose Weight and Alienate People promises me
a lot of things, the gist of which is that the novel is going to turn the
Chick Lit genre on its head in the same way Helen Fielding did with Bridget
Jones (I am one of the only people in the world offended by that statement as
I hated Bridget Jones and all that she stood for). It promises to be
hilarious and thought-provoking and while I can't really agree with the
former, it very much is the latter - although for me, it's thought-provoking
for all the wrong reasons. It's almost like a Marmite novel - you're either
going to lap it up and agree with everything Quain writes, or you're going to
dislike it and not quite 'get' it. Sadly, I didn't quite 'get' it.

I have to admit to being engrossed whilst reading this story. It was both
shocking and a bit depressing to realise and comprehend the battle with
weight in the midst of this story. Every event a battle of wills, each action
a possible temptation. One bite means a thousand reactions.

When you think of the battle on a level of eating disorders it perhaps easy
to acknowledge how difficult it can be for someone who suffers from such a
disorder. However when you equate that to the mindset of the majority of
women it just feels like a blanket of literal weight falling upon the
   shoulders of society.

Society has created a legion of women, who fight the eternal battle with
calories every day for most of their lives, just to be accepted by others and
   themselves.

As soon as I read the synopsis for this book, I knew I had to read it.
"Vivian has hit her mid 30s and can’t work out how to get what she wants.

major film star get his mojo back following a very public scandal"

Reading that synopsis, I clicked the request button straight away, and I had
really been hoping I would get this book to review. Why? Why from just a
synopsis? Because reading about the character on the book, I immediately felt
   a...

Vivian Ward is a woman who thinks she is in complete control of her life,
when in reality she is a thirty five out of work actress who puts more work
into partying then getting good acting parts, not to mention her bad
relationship with her family and being emotionally unavailable to her
boyfriend. To be honest, the only thing Vivian is in complete control of is
what is on her plate. But then she meets Maximilian Fry who as it turns out
is just as screwed up, and then she begins to journey into a world of
celebrity even more damaging than the one she was already in….

I particularly enjoyed Ollie Quain’s humour and way of writing. The writing
style was very addictive and although initially I didn’t know what to expect
with this novel, I was hooked from the beginning and tho...

When Mira got in touch with me to review How to lose weight and alienate
people, I wasn't too keen. I decided to take it to review anyway as I've had
my eyes opened to a few books this way and it's always been a great surprise.

I didn't like it much to be honest. I didn't take at all to heroine Vivian,
or the story that surrounded her past. I found it all a bit pushed and
far-fetched. When you read it you will understand what I mean by that. I
can't say anymore as I won't give away spoilers. I felt like I was on a merry
go round going around and round and not getting anywhere.
It did pick up near the end though, and I did enjoy that part. It sped up,
the flow was better, and it didn't irritate me so much that Maximilian was
used in every sentence that came out of Vivian's...

There's a certain sense of reality that hits when one is losing weight or
loses weight. Very rarely do we find "fat" people being genuinely confident
of themselves unless they've been thin and piled on the pounds for any
specific reason, or are strong willed and minded enough to ignore barbs that
   we're subject to.

   Case in reference: Aishwarya Rai.

Ollie Quain hits the nail on the head when saying "There's no such thing as
fat and proud. You never feel pride. Who cares what you're feeling if you're
fat? No one wants to find out what is making you tick because they assume
that all you do is wait for the clock to tick round to the next mealtime or
   snack break."

Brilliant book with a subtle hint of traditional dark and slightly cynical
   British humour which I've...

Great debut with a dodgy title and a rather unhealthy amount of body shaming.

I enjoyed parts of this book, but felt it did drag on a bit in some places -
lots of scenes could have been cut and still made sense to the reader.

Lots of funny moments were overshadowed by a huge amount of body negativity
and fat shaming. Can't help but feel sorry for Vivian if she feels that truly
the absolute worst thing she could possibly be is fat. Poor dab, she
definitely needs some time with me to fix that (I know, I know she's not a
   real person...!)

I loved the showbizzy glamour and gossipy element to the book and would
definitely seek out another title by this author again. Four stars.

Copy received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Fluffy fun read ...completely predictable but laugh out loud funny :)

Took me so long to finish this book because I could just not get into it.
Ollie is a fun humorous writer who has a bright future ahead of her but this
book just did not do it for me :/

A few insightful truths hidden under fluffy chick lit. I really enjoyed this.

My Favourite quote by far was
"Growing up is simply learning how to cover up"

the main message I got is to be honest with yourself and love yourself to
   find true happiness and love.

I enjoyed this much more than I thought and thought it summed up are culture
of judging people on their looks and action very well. Also shows how fake a
lot of the media stuff is.

I was never a party girl and honestly probably come across as the overly
happy like Tabitha but most of the thoughts Vivian has about herself and food
I have had specially being an bigger than average women. Personally though I
think if my partner read this he would understand what going on in my head. I
guessed that Maximillian was gay after Zoe said they never slept together and
   the way he act...
