SC24: HALFWAY THERE

By Doug Eadline

November 20, 2024

Much like my Under the Wire series, there are news and events at SC that don’t
merit a full story but are worth mentioning. The following is a quick check-in
midway through SC24. The weather is supposed to turn cold, but it has been a bit
hot in ‘Lanta. Don’t forget the daily video recaps for a quick overview. HPCwire
will have more coverage extending into next week, but here is a quick snapshot
of some things thus far.

SHOW STATS

As of Wednesday, the attendance was 17,959, a new record by several thousand!
Also, it is the largest show floor ever, with over 500 vendors and
organizations, 136 of them new. The show floor has been almost impassable at
some points.

There are 90 research papers from 18 countries, 44 workshops, 36 in-depth
tutorials, 89 Birds of Feather sessions, 77 research posters, and 16 Doctoral
showcase posters. Check that box.

Of course, it is an AI-palooza, but we all expected that.

THE VENUE

The SC24 venue is multi-level; enter on the fourth floor and spelunk your way to
meeting rooms or head to the expo on the first floor. There are lots of stairs,
escalators, levels, walkways, and inconsistent elevators. Just to make things
interesting, many of the escalators are not working. The venue map, portion
shown below, was of no help.

Artists rendition of SC24 venue map

A BETTER MAP

There is a  large world map in the main lobby before you enter the labyrinth.
Attendees are asked to put two stickers on the map, a white one indicating where
they were born and a black one to indicate where they are now. Big data at its
finest. Although it lacks the resolution, I found it easier to navigate the
venue using this map.

SC24 World Map: Where you were born and where you are now.

PEACH MECHANICS

In order to explain the wonders of SCinet, the crack journalists in the Press
Room (see below) calculated some amazing facts to help the reader relate to this
year’s SCinet. First, SCinet hit a new record of 8.71 Tbps, making it the
world’s fastest network for one week, and it consumes roughly one megawatt per
day.

Using the famous Georgia peach as a metric, SCinet performance and power can be
explained as follows. Based on the energy content of a typical peach, SCinet
eats the equivalent of 2.9 billion peaches of power for one day of use (I wonder
what they do with the pits). It uses half a marathon’s worth of fiber and can
transmit 259.6 billion peach emojis per second (UTF-8). Note these numbers have
not been verified by people who know what they are doing.

THE MOUNTAIN

Some other news is the presence of the Game of Thrones (GOT) “The Mountain,” Sir
Gregor Clegane in the VDURA Booth (#2209). Well, not the real GOT Mountain, but
the man who plays him, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson. He is in the booth lifting heavy
things, and we are not sure what to call him exactly because we cannot pronounce
his name. He is the strongest person on earth, so I am going to cover all the
bases and call him Mr. Sir Hafþór Júlíus Mountain Gregor Clegane Björnsson.

THE PRESSROOM

One little-known fact about all SC meetings is the Press Room – a haven for
journalist elites attending the show. Little is known about the inciteful (not a
typo) conversations taking place around the tables of this room. The room is the
birthplace of many of the breaking SC stories and the graveyard of many attempts
at trying to explain quantum-AI, which is a thing but maybe should not be. This
year, someone without journalist credentials managed to gain access to first
take advantage of the free snacks and then grab a picture of the SC24 press
room. The picture is re-posted here to get ahead of the social media blow-back
that will surely follow. In addition we would entice those who want to join the
5th estate. Any resemblance of anyone or anything is pure coincidence.
