SMART Designs: Bridging the Gap Between Clinical Trials and Practice in
Infectious Diseases
Lara Maleyeff and others
Traditional Randomized Controlled Trials often fall short in addressing the
specific needs of clinical practice due to their one-size-fits-all treatment
approaches. Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trials (SMARTs) offer a
dynamic and adaptive approach, allowing for multiple randomizations ...

Immunogenicity, safety, and persistence induced by triple- and standard-strength
four-dose hepatitis B vaccination regimens in hemodialysis patients: A
multicenter, randomized, parallel-controlled trial in Six cities in Shanxi
Province
Tian Yao and others
Background Hemodialysis (HD) patients represent a high-risk group for hepatitis
B infection. It is crucial to administer hepatitis B vaccination and stimulate
higher and more sustained levels of anti-HBs. Our aim is to enhance the
immunogenicity and persistence by implementing high-dose and ...
COVID-19 Disease Incidence and Severity in Previously Infected Unvaccinated
Compared with Previously Uninfected Vaccinated Persons
Adeel A Butt and others
Among 13,976 matched pairs in the VA national COVID-19 database, vaccinated
individuals who developed breakthrough infection were less likely to experience
hospitalization/death compared with unvaccinated individuals who developed
reinfection.
Respiratory Isolation for Tuberculosis: A Historical Perspective
Petros C Karakousis and Graham Mooney
Although tuberculosis is an ancient disease, recognition of its airborne route
of transmission, with implications for respiratory isolation, is only relatively
recent. Since the time of Hippocrates, the dogma among health practitioners was
that the disease was hereditary or that it could be ...

Sex Workers and the Mpox Response in Africa
Yusuff Adebayo Adebisi and others
The ongoing mpox outbreak in Africa, now classified as a Public Health Emergency
of International Concern by the World Health Organization, presents a severe
challenge, particularly for vulnerable populations like sex workers. Despite the
endemic presence of mpox in Africa since the 1970s, recent ...
Measles: What Goes Around, Comes Around
William J Moss and Diane E Griffin
Measles cases are increasing globally and in the United States because of low
routine measles vaccine coverage and disruptions to immunization services during
the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. To achieve and sustain measles
elimination requires maintaining high coverage with 2 doses of measles vaccine,
addressing vaccine hesitancy and misinformation, strong political commitment,
and the necessary financial resources.
Instrumental Variables Analysis and Mendelian Randomization for Causal Inference
Erica E M Moodie and Saskia le Cessie
Causal inference is a branch of statistics that attempts to quantify the impact
of a treatment or intervention on an outcome, recognizing that, when
experimentation is impossible, the treatment allocation may not be independent
of other factors that predict the outcome. Rather, there may be common ...
Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Loss: What Does Integration Have to Do With a
Functional Hepatitis B Virus Cure?
Ashwin Balagopal and Chloe L Thio
Worldwide, approximately, 400 million people have chronic hepatitis B virus
(HBV) infection (chronic hepatitis B [CHB]), a leading cause of liver-related
death [ 1 ]. A highly effective vaccine has prevented millions of infections but
belies the challenge to treat and cure those with CHB. The ...
Why is Parasite Sex Sexy?
Sebastian Shaw and Boris Striepen
Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of severe diarrheal disease around the world.
Recent field research points to parasite sex as the source of
hypertransmissibility fueling continental sweeps, while new laboratory studies
took advantage of Cryptosporidium sex to build powerful experimental ...

JID WELCOMES EDITORIAL MENTEES

After a successful pilot program last year, the IDSA journals are pleased to
announce the mentees participating in the 2024 editorial mentoring program. Juan
Calix, MD, PhD, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Steven Clipman,
PhD, MSPH, from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will be serving
as JID’s editorial mentees. Dr. Calix and Dr. Clipman will work directly with
JID editors through January 2025 to gain a deeper understanding of a medical
journal editor’s role and work. Our editors are grateful to all who applied and
look forward to working with this year’s selected mentees.

JID NOW OFFERS REVIEW PATHWAY FOR PAPERS REJECTED BY HIGH-IMPACT JOURNALS

The Journal of Infectious Diseases welcomes papers that have been peer reviewed
by another medical journal and were not accepted for publication, where the
authors believe they can address the essential concerns identified by previous
reviewers. Under this new pathway, authors can revise the paper according to the
review comments they previously received and then submit the paper to JID. This
new pathway is intended to speed publication and minimize unnecessary re-review
of papers that previously received thorough and detailed review elsewhere.

Learn more about how to submit using this pathway.
