Can Sleeping in Your Car Drunk Get You a DWI in Louisiana?

CAN SLEEPING IN YOUR CAR DRUNK GET YOU A DWI IN LOUISIANA?

With the holidays and Mardi Gras fast approaching, this is good information to
have. Listen, we've all been over-served at some point. And no one wants to have
to go back and get their car the morning after because they had too much to
drink the night before and had to catch a ride with a friend or grab an Uber,
but drinking and driving in Louisiana is illegal. Plus, you could not only hurt
yourself, but you could also hurt someone else and that would be pretty darn
hard to live with, especially during the holidays. So that brings up the
question...

CAN SLEEPING IN YOUR CAR DRUNK GET YOU A DWI IN LOUISIANA?

The answer is yes, you can absolutely get a DWI for sleeping in your car drunk
in Louisiana. And I think it's interesting that while discussing this question
with a friend, the subject of whether or not the keys were in the car's ignition
came up, and then whether the keys were in the car at all. Here's the deal. It
doesn't matter where the keys are in Louisiana, because it appears that you had
the intent to drive. Now, a good lawyer can argue just about anything, so if
you'd like to read more about it, I suggest visiting FightDUICharges.com. Just
to be clear, I'm not providing the link as a way to promote drinking and
driving, I want you to see how serious the law is about this.

So, how about just randomly pulling over and sleeping in your car because you're
tired, taking alcohol or any other substances out of the equation? The reason I
bring this up is that I'm inherently cheap. When I'm on road trips, I'll stop at
a well-lit convenience store and catch 40 winks instead of paying for a hotel.
Is that legal? According to SmartFinancial.com, 'Louisiana's rest stops are open
24 hours a day, and you can sleep in your car there, day or night.' They also
say you can sleep in your car in some business parking lots, but I recommend
asking first.

Good luck, be safe and for the love, get yourself a designated driver!

READ MORE: TOP 10 BEERS MADE IN LOUISIANA

Ghost in the Machine

via Parish Brewing Company

GHOST IN THE MACHINE

It doesn't matter who you talk to...in state, out of state, doesn't matter, this
is THE best beer brewed in Louisiana. Parish Brewing Company has several entries
on this list. Personally, it's my favorite. Beer experts say it's their
favorite. And according to Beer Advocate, it is the most reviewed and highest
graded beer in the state.
Old Mad Joy

via Great Raft Brewing

OLD MAD JOY

I love Great Raft. I hang out there often. But of all their brews, this is the
best. It's flavorful. It's tasty. And it's got a little kick to it. It is the
perfect beer and it's brewed within spitting distance from my house. What more
could you want?
Jucifer

via Gnarly Barley Brewing

JUCIFER

I love this beer. I just love it! The worst part of Jucifer is that is almost
impossible to find outside of the New Orleans area. But the 6 hour drive to have
a few pints is totally worth it.

Korova Milk Porter

via Gnarly Barley Brewing

KOROVA MILK PORTER

This is the second entry to the list from Gnarly Barley. While I am partial to
dark beers, this beer is almost other worldly. Its aromatic. It's flavorful.
It's sweet but not too sweet. If you're a fan of Reese's Puffs cereal, you'll
LOVE this beer.
Piety

via NOLA Brewing Company

PIETY

NOLA Brewing Co. makes some top notch beer. From the Brown Ale to Flippy Floppy,
it's all really good. But, for me, Piety is the best thing they make. Aged in
wine barrel and brewed with a cherry puree, this sour ale might be the most
unique and flavorful entry on this list.
318 Golden Ale

via Great Raft Brewing

318 GOLDEN ALE

Arguably, Great Raft has 'better' beers than the 318 Golden Ale. And, agreed,
they have more complex beers. They have more robust beers. But, if you're in the
mood for a high quality beer that you can drink with the buds while fishing or
hanging out, it doesn't get much better than a 318. It's just a super quality
brew that you can enjoy anywhere, at any time.

Voodoo Pale Ale

via Tin Roof Brewing

VOODOO PALE ALE

This award winning beer is one I keep in regular rotation. Much like the 318,
it's not super heavy. It's a light bodied beer you can enjoy in any situation.
It's got some fruit hints, but overall, it's just a good straight forward beer.
Bourbon Street Old Fashioned Pale Ale

via Abita

BOURBON STREET OLD FASHIONED PALE ALE

Abita makes really good beers. From Purple Haze to their Amber to their
Strawberry, it's all sold stuff. But, this is my favorite. It's got a nice
aroma. Has a solid cherry, orange and bourbon flavor without any of the tastes
being overpowering. Of all the Abita beers, this one is the best.
Reve Coffee Stout

via Parish Brewing Co.

REVE COFFEE STOUT

Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of 'Coffee' beers. But, Parish Brewing made
something special with Reve.

Irish Channel Stout

via NOLA Brewing

IRISH CHANNEL STOUT

This is just a good, solid beer. It's not the best thing on this list. It's not
the best thing NOLA Brewing makes. But, when you're in the mood for a stout,
this is one of the best you can get.

Absinthe

https://www.whereyat.com

ABSINTHE

Absinthe (Green Fairy) This is one drink I am not a fan of. It has a medicinal
flavor and quite an aftertaste. If I told you it has a slight taste of licorice
and herbs, you might understand why some people don't like it. But lots of folks
do. I don't like licorice of any kind. Most bars will serve absinthe as a drink
called “The Green Fairy” It's 2 oz of absinthe in a fluted glass with a sugar
cube is on a slotted spoon over the top of your glass. You then drip ice water
over the glass which dissolves the sugar.
Brandy Milk Punch

https://www.whereyat.com

BRANDY MILK PUNCH

Want to try to make this drink? It's not hard. This sweet drink dates all the
way back to pre-colonial days. It's made with cream (or milk), simple syrup, a
splash of vanilla and brandy. You toss some nutmeg in the glass after pouring it
over ice. This is one of my favorites. But is not the go-to drink if you are on
a diet. It's not bad for helping you get over a hangover.
Cafe Brulot

https://www.whereyat.com

CAFE BRULOT

This is another one of those New Orleans specialty drinks that I have not tried.
But it sure sounds good. Think of this one as coffee spiked with brandy and set
on fire. You can substitute Cognac for the brandy. You also use cinnamon and
cloves, orange and lemon peels. Part of the beauty of this drink is to peel the
orange in one single spiral. Experts say this drink was very popular during
prohibition because the coffee masked the alcohol.

French 75

https://www.whereyat.com

FRENCH 75

I've never heard of this drink, but the folks at Whereyat.com say this is quite
a popular drink in the crescent city. The drink was invented in the early
1900's, but we don't know who invented it. Click here to see how it's made. So
what is a French 75? It's Cognac or gin with lemon, sugar and Champagne. Really
does sound interesting. But might be a little sweet. I'll have to try one.
Hand Grenade

https://www.whereyat.com

HAND GRENADE

This is probably the most popular drink in New Orleans right now. You will see
hundreds of folks carrying these drinks around in the French Quarter. It is
typically sold in that tall signature plastic cup shaped like a hand grenade on
the bottom. I guess I'd describe it as a fruity drink. The exact recipe varies
but it has vodka, melon liqueur, coco leaf liqueur, margarita mixer and a
squeeze of lime. The "official" Hand Grenade is available at Tropical Island
locations and The Funky Pirate which are all on Bourbon Street. One of these
drinks will definitely take a toll on you. So buyer beware.
Hurricane

https://www.whereyat.com

HURRICANE

I love this drink. It is sweet and fruity and is probably the most famous drink
in Louisiana. It's a staple at Pat O'Brien's in the French Quarter where it was
invented back in the 1940's. This is a rum based drink, but it has so much more
in it including fruit juices and grenadine. Part of the charm of this drink is
to get it in the tall lamp-shaped glass they have at Pat O's. You pay a little
more for the glass, but it is worth the price. I think it tastes different in
the plastic cup. You can buy the mix and do it yourself at home if you are a big
fan.

Ramos Gin Fizz

https://www.whereyat.com

RAMOS GIN FIZZ

Have you ever heard of this drink? I have not, but I really want to try one now.
According to Whereyat.com, it's also known as “How to Piss Off Your Bartender”
Because it has a long list of ingredients. Check this out: the white of a single
egg, orange flower water, lemon juice, lime juice, cream, gin, simple syrup, and
club soda. You also have to shake this drink a ton, so it will wear out your
arm. Some say it should be shaken for more than 10 minutes!!! This is one drink
you will want to see how it''s made.
Sazerac

https://www.whereyat.com

SAZERAC

This is the official cocktail of New Orleans as declared by the state
legislature. The Sazerac is rye whiskey, bitters and absinthe. It has a licorice
based taste. It's sweet and spicy at the same time. It does have quite the
aftertaste. I'm not really a fan of this drink, but it is very popular in New
Orleans and it's become popular across the state. It's worth noting that the
Sazerac is said to be one of the world's first ever cocktails. It dates back to
the 1830's.
Vieux Carré

https://www.whereyat.com

VIEUX CARRÉ

Some have described this cocktail as "Gumbo in a Glass". That's pretty darn
accurate. In this drink, you will find Cognac and Benedictine along with sweet
vermouth. It also has rye and Angostura bitters and even toss in some Peychaud’s
bitters. This drink was invented in the 1930's at the Hotel Monteleone. Legend
has it that this cocktail was created to honor a regular customer, but he
suddenly died after tasting it. This is a strong drink and you need to have your
big boy pants on to enjoy this strong cocktail.
