I saw this in Word live collaboration only last week but it also occurs in
Excel. It appears to happen when saving the file and the users Upload Center is
having authentication issues.

Click the Protect Sheet button to Unprotect Sheet when a worksheet is protected.
If prompted, enter the password to unprotect the worksheet. Select the whole
worksheet by clicking the Select All button. On the Home tab, click the Format
Cell Font popup launcher. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+F or Ctrl+1. In my
company we have an excel workbook that is shared between 6-7 people. They used
to be able to see who had it open because the file would say locked for editing
by 'insert user name', but now it just says 'another user'. Team members to
create and edit files on the site. By default, team owners and members can share
the site itself with people outside the team without actually adding them to the

RESOLUTION METHOD 1

 1. Get all users who collaborate on the file to close it, both in Excel and
    Excel Online.
 2. On each machine they use, launch the Upload Center and check that none of
    them are showing pending or failed uploads, specifically for that file.
 3. Attempt to resolve the issue in the Upload Center or discard the file in the
    queue.
 4. Do not attempt to reopen the file Excel and Excel Online for 30 minutes.
    This should allow SharePoint to release the lock.
 5. Test again.

 1. Determine which user account is reporting as having the file locked.
 2. Ask them to launch Excel and open the file then close it.
 3. Test again.

 2. Ask them to launch Excel and click on File > Info > Manage Workbook.
 3. Click on “Check out”, then immediately go back and click on “Check in”.
 4. Test again.

 3. Log back in to the Office Apps.

You should see who is locking the file if other users keep trying to open/save
it in Excel. Sometimes you just see the read only message but that can vary from
user to user.

1. Open a workbook.

2. On the File tab, click Save As.

3. Click Browse.

4. Click on the Tools button and click General Options.

5. In the Password to modify box, enter a password and click OK.

Note: If you only want to recommend users to open the Excel file as read-only,
without protecting it, don't enter a password and check Read-only recommended.

6. Reenter the password and click on OK.

Note: this feature does not encrypt your Excel file.

7. Enter a file name and click Save.

Your workbook is read-only now.
