One of the more intriguing themes in this fall’s midterm elections pits the
appeal of outsider candidates against that of professional politicians.

Electing leaders with little or no experience in office has been a feature of
the populist-conservative revolution that has swept the Western world in the
last decade—for good reason. As voters have become disillusioned with the
failures of their professional-run governments, they have turned to candidates
unencumbered by previous association with politics.
