Why Local Shelters Desperately Need Help

Nearly 1 million cats and dogs are killed in shelters every year. Many of these
animals could have found a home, but for the lack of resources many shelters
face.

Why are shelters struggling? Because humane confusion is widespread in America.

Despite the words “humane society” in its name, the Humane Society of the United
States (HSUS) is not formally affiliated with any humane societies that operate
at a city, county or regional level. HSUS does not run a single pet shelter and
only one percent of its budget consists of grants to pet shelters. The
organization spends millions, however, on salaries for its executives.

Similarly, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
is not affiliated with or an umbrella group for local SPCAs. The ASPCA’s CEO
makes about $800,000 a year.

Most Americans aren’t aware of these facts. Americans often think donations to
national groups will trickle down to their communities. Instead, this money is
often wasted.
