GLOBAL PRECIPITATION CLIMATOLOGY CENTRE (GPCC) DE

GPCC Precipitation Normals in mm/ month (Version 2022) per 0.25 degree grid for
July

THE GLOBAL PRECIPITATION CLIMATOLOGY CENTRE (GPCC): OPERATED BY DWD UNDER THE
AUSPICES OF THE WORLD METEOROLOGICAL ORGANIZATION (WMO)

The Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) provides global precipitation
analyses for monitoring and research of the earth's climate. The centre is a
German contribution to the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the
Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).

PRODUCT INFO

The GPCC provides unrestricted access to its gridded monthly and daily
precipitation data sets for climate monitoring purposes and related research.
All users are requested to refer to the GPCC and the product specific DOI
(Digital Object Identifier) reference as provided with the products. Available
are the following user tailored products that differ with regard to the
underlying data and the use case:First Guess Monthly of monthly precipitation
anomalies based on SYNOP messages of approx. 7,000 stations arriving with DWD
(Offenbach). Maps (GIF) and data product become retrievable within 5 days after
observation month through the GPCC Visualizer (Drop Down Menu Item „GPCC
Landsurface First Guess Product 1.0°“) and the GPCC Download Gate.First Guess
Daily analysis of global precipitation totals and anomalies based on SYNOP
messages of meanwhile approx. 7,000 stations arriving with DWD (Offenbach). The
data product becomes available 5 days after the observation month through the
GPCC Download Gate.Monitoring Product (Version 2020) for the period 1982 to
present based on quality-controlled monthly data from 7,000-9,000 stations. Maps
and the gridded product become retrievable at resolutions 1.0° and 2.5° degrees
lat/long 2 months after the observation month through the GPCC Visualizer (Drop
Down Menu Item „GPCC Landsurface Monitoring Monthly Product 1.0° / 2.5°“) and
the GPCC Download Gate.Full Data Monthly V.2020 for the period 1891 to 2019
based on quality-controlled data from all stations in GPCC's data base available
at the month of regard with a maximum number of more than 53,000 stations in
1986/1987. This product is optimized for best spatial coverage and use for water
budget studies. Maps and the gridded product become retrievable at resolutions
0.25°, 0.5°, 1.0° and 2.5° degrees lat/long through the GPCC Visualizer (Drop
Down Menu Item „GPCC Landsurface Full Data Monthly Product V.2020 0.25°/ 0.5° /
1.0° / 2.5°“) and the GPCC Download Gate.Full Data Daily V.2020 of daily global
land-surface precipitation is based on data provided by national meteorological
and hydrological services, global and regional data collections as well as WMO
GTS-data. This product contains the daily totals on a regular grid with a
spatial resolution of 1.0° x 1.0° latitude by longitude. Relative precipitation
anomalies at the stations are interpolated and then superimposed on the GPCC
Full Data Monthly V.2020. The temporal coverage of the dataset ranges from
January 1982 until December 2019. This GPCC product is recommended to be used
when the daily precipitation information is of highest importance, e.g. for
analyses of extreme events and related statistics at daily resolution and
available as netCDF files through the GPCC Download Gate.HOAPS/GPCC global daily
precipitation data set is a combined analysis of satellite and in-situ
observations for the period 1988 to 2008 with an uncertainty estimation of the
gridded values. A spatial resolution of 1.0° and 2.5° is provided for the global
analysis and additionally 0.5° resolution for an European sector and available
as netCDF files through the GPCC Download Gate. This dataset was created within
the DAPACLIP project (Daily Precipitation Analysis for Climate Prediction). The
DAPACLIP project was part of the MiKlip project framework (Mittelfristige
Klimaprognosen) and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and
Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF).Gridded
Precipitation Climatology (V.2020) based on monthly means focussing on the
period 1951-2000 for approx. 85,000 stations. The gridded climatology fields
(0.25°, 0.5°, 1.0° and 2.5°) form the background fields for the anomaly
interpolation utilized on all DOI referenced GPCC products and are available via
the GPCC Visualizer (Drop Down Menu Item „GPCC Precipitation Climatology V. 2020
0.25° /  0.5° / 1.0° / 2.5°“) and as netCDF files through the GPCC Download
Gate.HOMPRA Europe (V1) is a homogenized and quality-controlled data product
suitable for trend analysis. The product is provided for the years 1951-2005 and
is based on 5536 stations. The gridded data are available in netCDF format with
a spatial resolution of 0.5 °, 1.0 ° and 2.5 ° and available as netCDF files
through the GPCC Download Gate.GPCC drought index is a standardized anomaly of
precipitation and potential evapotranspiration regarding to long term means.
Precipitation data are taken from GPCC's "First Guess" product and temperature
data from "NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Monthly Global Surface Air
Temperature Data Set". Aggregation periods of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 48 months
are calculated and available as netCDF files through the GPCC Download
Gate.Retrospective GPCC drought index is a standardized anomaly of precipitation
and potential evapotranspiration regarding long term means for the period 1952
to 2013. Precipitation data are taken from GPCC's "Full Data Monthly" product
and temperature data from "NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Monthly Global
Surface Air Temperature Data Set". Aggregation periods of 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and
48 months are calculated and available as netCDF files through the GPCC Download
Gate. 50-Year VASClimO Data Set 1951 to 2000 (V1.1), based on quality-controlled
and homogenized time-series from 9343 stations. This product is optimized for
homogeneity in time and for application in climate variability studies. Direct
download of gridded data (0.5°) is possible from the VASClimO page of this
Website.GPCC Interpolation Test Dataset (ITD) was created to provide "open"
precipitation data for users to compare their interpolation results with the
GPCC interpolation procedure. Depart from the operational interpolation of
anomalies, monthly precipitation totals were interpolated, because the necessary
long term means to compute the anomalies could not be provided. As described in
Becker et al. (2013), the interpolation was done at a finer subgrid and
subsequent area and land portion weighting. Only (aggregated) monthly
precipitation totals from the GHCN dataset (e.g., Menne et al., 2012) were used
as input data. This dataset is applicable for the comparison of interpolation
schemes, but not for hydrological or climatological analyses, and available as
netCDF files through the GPCC Download Gate.
The GPCP (Global Precipitation Climatology Project) generate global
precipitation analyses (land and ocean) based on satellite observations. GPCCs
Monitoring Product is used as reference for land areas.
The gridded gauge-analysis products provided by the GPCC are not bias corrected
for systematic gauge measuring errors. However, the GPCC provides estimates for
that error (climatological estimates up to Dec. 2006; since Jan. 2007 taking the
weather conditions during the month into account) as well as the number of
gauges used on the grid (accessible via the Visualizer). In addition to that,
information about the proportion of the different precipitation phases (liquid,
solid, mixed) is available since Jan. 2007 (detailed description of GPCC's
global precipitation analysis products).
Users of the gauge products are recommended to apply the correction factors
within the application, to consider the station density of the respective
precipitation product, and to select the product which fits best your scientific
application.
