MOVIE REVIEW CITY HUNTER: SHINJUKU PRIVATE EYES (2019) - THE ACTION OF THE
PERVERTED HERO WHO IS STILL TOUGH BUT FLAT IN STORYTELLING

City Hunter is a manga created by Tsukasa Hojo and published since 1985-1992 in
Shonen Jump, Shueisha . To date, 35 books in the City Hunter series have been
collected, which have the main character a flamboyant and perverted detective
(Sweeper) , Ryo Saeba and his partner and love interest Kaori Makimura.

After various TV anime series that aired in the period 1987-1991, followed by a
live action film starring Jackie Chan as well as various versions of the big
screen anime and South Korean live action series adaptations, the big screen
anime film City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes by the director. Kenji Kodama is
here this year and will open in Indonesian theaters starting October 2, 2019.



Synopsis
Ryo Saeba (voiced by Akira Kamiya ) and Kaori Makimura (Kazue Ikura) have a
beautiful female client named Ai Shindo (Marie Iitoyo) who works as a model and
experiences unpleasant events because they are always followed by a group of
suspicious people. Moreover, he only experienced this incident after the death
of his father in a traffic accident.



Without further ado, Ryo accepted the case, he and Kaori uncovered more
mysteries behind the model's problems. Many things happen in the middle of the
investigation, Kaori's reuniting with her childhood friend Mikuni Shinji (Koichi
Yamadera) who is now the CEO of a technology company, as well as the appearance
of an arms dealer in Shinjuku, leading them to a terrible conclusion.
Unexpectedly the Ai case is the "key" to a conspiracy that threatens Shinjuku
and the world.



Review
Manga City Hunter, which was created in the 1980s, is actually a legendary manga
with a variety of memorable characters from manga, anime to live action versions
. Ryo Saeba is familiar with manga or comic fans from Japan thanks to his
consistent characterization, good at shooting and fighting, handsome, playboy,
flirtatious and perverted to the point where he doesn't shyly show his lewdness.

It is quite risky, in fact, that City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes  still
maintains such Ryo's character, considering that nowadays everything related to
harassment that is displayed throughout the media will face the fingers of
netizens who will discuss it in the realm of social media, and will
automatically set a bad precedent on the film. For the author himself this is
only a risk, because we understand that Ryo Saeba's character is like that by
nature and understand that this film and Ryo's nasty scenes are just hyperbolic
because they are also followed by the iconic scene of Kaori carrying a big
hammer and hitting it at Ryo who was acting perverted.



Apart from the above notes, the film City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes has a
fairly standard quality. The nostalgic elements with the animation style,
familiar characters and 80s-style songs that are played seem to make City Hunter
fans hysterical. But from the side of the script written by Yoichi Katoh,
unfortunately, it doesn't have anything special other than accommodating the
plot and including various characters that are familiar to fans.

In addition to the main characters, characters such as Saeko Nogami, Omibozu and
Miki are present in the film plus the presence of 3 accomplished thieves from
the Cat's Eye Hitomi group, Ai, and Rui Kisugi which is another series by
Tsukasa Hojo . The presence of the Cat's Eye trio in this film is the most
significant drawback due to its meaningless presence that functions for the plot
and feels like it is only included as fan service .



The mystery elements in this film are also not well worked out, as if Ryo and
Kaori do not have significant challenges and difficulties in solving the cases
that Ai is facing. Everything went smoothly without any hints implanted to make
the audience curious. It seems that the action scenes and funny actions of Ryo
and Omibozu as well as elements of nostalgia are the main selling points of this
film.

In terms of production quality, this film is reminiscent of anime commonly
produced by Japanese film studios. With his manga-like drawing strokes, make the
1980s feel very pronounced. It will be a little difficult to reach millennial
viewers who are unfamiliar with City Hunter, but it will once again please its
die-hard fans. Director Kenji Kodama, who also directed the TV series City
Hunter in the 1987-1988 period and several versions of the TV Movie and its
videos, has successfully provided a touch of nostalgia in this film.

The voice actors in this film are quite good at voicing their characters. It's a
little funny at the scene where Ryo's attitude changes to see Kaori replacing a
wedding dress model. Akira Kamiya's voice character is made heavier according to
Ryo, who is suddenly cool, unusual but into a unique variation.

Final Conclusion
Returning many sweet memories to fans, the film City Hunter: Shinjuku Private
Eyes unfortunately did not give anything special to the presentation of the film
for the general public. The stories tend to be standardized with the
construction of mysteries that are unable to make viewers curious about what a
detective-themed film should be. The pervert comedy itself feels old-fashioned,
although some of Ryo's and the other Omibozu's funny acts are enough to provoke
laughter. Finally, a Japanese anime dish that is quite interesting and can be an
alternative to watch in early October.

City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes is one of the shows that #Kaoreaders should
not miss, especially if you follow the anime series. Even though it comes with a
modern look, the core film still doesn't lose its identity as part of its
classic series. Well, for those who just want to follow City Hunter, this film
is also the right spectacle. In addition, City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes is
also able to present the atmosphere of the 80s and 90s era very well.
