DISCOVER THE GREAT WEST WAY®

Find out more about different areas of the Great West Way by clicking on the
locations below.

Bath & Bristol
Cotswolds
Wiltshire
Berkshire
Thames
 1. Bath & Bristol

At the western end of the Great West Way you’ll find Bristol and Bath. A
blessing for the urban adventurer since these 2 cities are so close together
geographically - just 15 minutes by train - yet miles apart in character.
 2. The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds offers the sort of chocolate box views that many imagine when
they think of England. Its honey-coloured limestone villages and rolling
farmland, dotted with curly-haired Cotswold sheep, make up the largest Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the country.
 3. Wiltshire

Between London and Bristol & Bath, and venturing up into the Cotswolds,
you’ll find the county of Wiltshire. Patchwork fields, chalk plateauxs and
irresistibly pretty villages. It’s not all rural heartland, of course,
there’s market towns and a city to explore too...
 4. Royal County of Berkshire

Considering its proximity to London, this home county is big on old English
charm. With its leafy villages, wild pastures and horse-drawn canal boats,
you can hop off the train and feel as though you’ve travelled back in time a
    few hundred years.
 5. Thames

A boat ride on the River Thames reveals a real spectacle of sights, winding
out of London via some of the capital’s most magnificent attractions - the
Houses of Parliament, Hampton Court Palace and Kew Gardens. But as you
venture further west, new spectacles unfold.

WELCOME TO THE GREAT WEST WAY. A TOURING ROUTE BETWEEN LONDON AND BRISTOL BASED
ON ANCIENT ROUTES, FOLLOWING 500 MILES OF NAVIGABLE ROUTES, ROAMING THROUGH
IDYLLIC COUNTRYSIDE, QUAINT VILLAGES AND ELEGANT TOWNS.

At one end you have London, the ideal entry point to the Great West Way with its
world-renowned royal sights and rich cultural heritage. Then at the other, Bath
and Bristol - close neighbours geographically, but with distinct personalities.
While Bath is loved for its classical Georgian architecture and romantic
literary connections, Bristol is a riot of alternative art, music and dining
experiences, famous for nurturing pioneering spirits Brunel and Banksy. Along
the rest of the route lie relaxing riverside towns like Henley-on-Thames,
characterful villages like Pewsey and plenty of lush, green landscapes. These
places are all intrinsically linked, and well worth visiting in their own right,
but the Great West Way offers more than getting from A to B...

It’s for slow travellers just as interested in the journey, and the colourful
characters encountered along the way. And the big adventures that lead to
unexpected diversions. The long-awaited pilgrimage to Stonehenge, perhaps, that
leads to the secret stones of Avebury and 4,000 years of history you never knew
existed. It’s about saying yes to new experiences and delighting in smaller,
simple, special things - as well as the superlatives.

The Great West Way was made for self-guided travel, whether solo or with friends
and family. The sort that enlivens your senses and makes you see the world
afresh. Thanks to the A4 Great West Road, the Great Western Railway, the River
Thames, the Kennet and Avon Canal, and multiple foot and cycle paths, you can
choose how you get around.

You can mix and match your modes, too, depending on the length and breadth of
your trip. Whatever crazy combination of boat, bike, car or train enables you to
explore the attractions that most excite you, from the famous to the far-out.

Get ready to go in search of the real England. We've got lots of info to help
you plan your way. Find out more on our See & Do pages for some exciting things
to do, get a local's view on our Discover Our Way pages and check out our
suggested itineraries. After all, you never quite know what awaits the curious
around the next corner. And don't forget to book somewhere to stay along the
Way; there are grand hotels, cosy cottages, traditional inns and gorgeous
glamping sites to choose from. You can even spend the night on a boat!

Discover your way.

OUR GREAT WEST WAY: EMILY AND CHRISTINE

We talk to Emily and Christine - the Welcome Ambassador Volunteer Coordinators
for Bath - about slow travel, hidden gems and their favourite spots along the
Great West Way. Both have lived in the area for many years and having incredible
knowledge of the area. They're on hand to point you in the right direction when
exploring the city and answer any questions no matter how weird or wacky!

EXPLORING STRAWBERRY HILL HOUSE WITH IGERSLONDON

After a successful instameet back in November at Westonbirt Arboretum to mark
the launch of the Great West Way, we thought it was time to showcase the East
end of the route. We teamed up with IgersLondon to visit Strawberry Hill House
Flower Festival on 23 June. Strawberry Hill House was Horace Walpole’s summer
residence and is famous for being Britain’s finest example of Georgian Gothic
Revival architecture.
