DAILY UNIVERSAL REGISTER

BRIEFING

UK: Ofgem announces the updated energy price cap, which will come into effect
from April 1. At present the cap is £1,928 for a typical household; Rishi Sunak
continues a tour of Wales and addresses the Welsh Conservative party conference
in Llandudno; The General Synod of the Church of England holds its first meeting
of the year.
Germany: Final GDP figures for the fourth quarter of 2023 published.
Argentina: Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, visits Argentina, where he
will meet the recently elected President Milei.
India: Fourth Test of the series between India and England.

ON THIS DAY

In 1874 Major Walter Clopton Wingfield patented his game of Sphairistike, now
known as lawn tennis. On April 25, 1874, the first advertisement for
Sphairistike was placed in The Times; in 1885 the convicted murderer John
“Babbacombe” Lee survived three attempts to hang him, with the trapdoor failing
to open despite working during all tests — he became known as “the man they
could not hang”. His sentence was commuted to penal servitude. After he was
released he exploited his notoriety and died on March 19, 1945, aged 80. The
folk-rock group Fairport Convention drew on his life story for their 1971 album
“Babbacombe” Lee; in 1917 (March 8 by the Gregorian calendar) rioting workers in
Petrograd (St Petersburg) began the February Revolution that ended with the
abdication of Tsar Nicholas II; in 1945 the US flag was raised over Iwo Jima,
four days after troops landed on the Japanese-held Pacific Ocean island. Joe
Rosenthal won a Pulitzer prize for his photograph of the second, and larger,
flag raised that day; in 1980 36.6 million gallons of oil were spilt from the
tanker Irenes Serenade off Pylos, Greece.

NATURE NOTES

There are around 280 species of hoverfly in the UK, and they range from a few
millimetres in length to 2cm. Most of them don’t have common names, and are
known only by their Latin descriptions. A few, however, have vivid English
names. The footballer hoverfly is a chunky insect with a wingspan of 2.5cm, and
a distinctive colouration. Its black thorax is striped with three vertical lines
of gold — reminiscent of the 1893 Wolverhampton Wanderers kit, worn in the year
they won the FA Cup. In a life of two halves, the footballer can either be seen
basking in bright sunshine on vegetation, or laying eggs in the shadows around
puddles, ditches, canals, water butts, sodden manure and farmyard drains.
