A student studying to become a paramedic had the experience of a lifetime Monday
while helping to deliver a baby boy on Montreal’s Jacques-Cartier Bridge in
rush-hour traffic.

Dominic Girard, a student at Édouard-Montpetit College in Longueuil, was an
intern on board an ambulance when the paramedics he was working with received
the call.

The woman, a Longueuil resident, was rushing from her South Shore home to a
Montreal hospital with her husband when her labour accelerated.

Her husband stopped the car and called an ambulance.

The paramedics picked her up and headed northbound on the Jacques-Cartier Bridge
en route to the Saint-Luc Hospital.

Intern Dominic Girard, left, helped paramedics Pascal Girard, centre, and
André-Pierre Huot deliver a baby boy on Montreal's Jacques-Cartier Bridge.
((CBC))"Having done other births in the past I can say that the contractions
were close," said Urgences-Sante paramedic Pascal Ranger, who was driving the
ambulance. "I knew from experience we didn’t have much time."

His partner, André-Pierre Huot, was supervising the birth and thought they would
have enough time to get her to the hospital.

"But after driving about 500 metres we realized we weren’t going to make it,"
said Huot, who added it was the first time he had helped a woman to give birth.

As provincial police diverted traffic, the woman gave birth to a baby boy inside
the parked ambulance. It took just three pushes, the paramedics said.

Girard got out a vomit bag for the baby’s father who was feeling nauseous, and
helped monitor the mother’s oxygen levels, Ranger said.

"[Girard] reacted well … and acted pretty calm," Huot said. "Better than I would
have expected."

The mother, newborn and father were then taken to hospital after the birth.

"I thought it was magnificent because it is rare to see this sort of thing,"
Girard said. "I think I will make many [of my classmates] jealous."

Police said the woman is recovering and the baby is healthy.
