Embracing symmetrical proportions, the architectural form references the inverted hull of a ship with its elegant curved edges and strong linear dimensions. The floating upper level has been set back from the street to evoke a sense of depth whilst reducing the bulk of the building. Pure and sophisticated, the palette pays homage to the historic architectural character of the neighbourhood – composed of honest, organic materials that stand the test of time. A memorable arrival experience has been curated at the entrance with the inclusion of an exquisitely appointed lobby transitioning through to the residences. Two distinct architectural volumes address complementary yet disparate dialogues to activate Caulfield’s dynamic public realm whilst nurturing a welcoming ambience and resident privacy through the considered use of form and materiality. Across its lower volume, the building adopts the narrative of its suburban context with a pale brick facade which forms a robust foundation, anchoring Fabric within the narrative of its established neighbourhood and bestowing a strong sense of place. Abiding by the principles of art and design, Fabric’s architectural language as it emerges from the street employs symmetry and composition to cultivate an enduring elegance. Gently scalloped curves at the centre seam draw navigation into and through the building from the ground floor street front where commercial tenancies are intentionally transparent and welcoming. The upper volume of the building has been conceived in direct juxtaposition to the sculptural lines and softness of the lower volume. Constructed from heavily tinted glazing, the pared-back nature of its materiality renders a perception of a much smaller building, reducing its presence and giving the allusion of continuation with the rooflines of surrounding buildings.
