I am helping a tech limited person get their computer in order and they are
currently running Windows 7. As I understand things, its recommended to upgrade
to 10 or 11, but I want to know if its possible given the specs. I tried
searching, but didnt find anything really clear. Here are the specs, I can get
more if this is insufficient:

Windows 7 2009

Dell

Intel i5 2400 CPU @ 3.10 GHZ

4 GB RAM

64 OS

I also have the OEM serial number if that helps.

I would have to check again for hard drive space.

Thanks

If it is a Dell I would suggest that before attempting any update you first of
all check for and save any Windows 10 drivers that Dell may offer.

Try an in place upgrade from 7 to Windows 10 first, for this to be successful
Windows 7 must be fully up to date and as you mention, enough free space on the
HDD, warning, this may work but it being left so long before moving to Windows
10 a clean install of Windows 10 and the Dell system drivers will be required.

This Dell will not be able to ever be upgraded to Windows 11 as the hardware is
too old.

On top of what Phil said, if you can find another 4GB of RAM it will run Win 10
much better. If it's DDR3 you can buy it quite cheaply on eBay. And if you do
decide it needs a bigger hard drive then give serious consideration to replacing
the existing drive with an SSD, it  makes a huge difference to booting times.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I am going to recommend just buying a newer
computer. Its probably going to cost the same as any hardware upgrades and the
time to do all this stuff.

Is there a way to describe the risk to a computer running Windows 7?

Windows 7 receives no security updates...these updates are the backbone of any
protective system innate to a given version of Windows.

You may also experience difficulty finding an appropriate AV for Win 7.

The biggest and most exploited weakness with any version of Windows or other
O/S...is the user of the system.

Making routine backup images of your partitions/drives...using 3d-party
software...is probably the most important activity that any user can engage in.
