“I never wished I didn’t have a disability.”

That’s the first sentence in Judith Heumann’s bestselling memoir, Being Heumann.
Despite its brevity, it’s impactful and thought provoking.

As she explained in an interview, she felt it was an important statement to make
“because I believe that many people feel that those of us who have disabilities
wish we didn't have them…I believe it's important that people recognize the
contributions that we make. That disability is something that helps many of us
be problem-solvers and creators and networkers, and therefore, I thought it was
really important to say that.”

The Importance of Intersectionality
Heumann’s life experiences brought something to the table that others don’t
have, part of the bigger picture of diversity and inclusion. For her, bringing
together the experiences of people with disabilities with other movements
currently happening, like the women’s movement or Black Lives Matter, became
important because she believed the barriers faced are similar.

As she told The Cut, “The disability community brings in an area of expertise in
disability, other communities bring in their areas of expertise, and coming
together and working together helps us increase the visibility of the disability
community. To me, it’s really expanding the circle to grow and grow, and
ultimately allowing people to see that there are so many valuable voices out
there, some of which are being heard, some of which are not being heard.

“Look at the value of working together. In the disability community that has
meant really cross-disability. I had polio, but I’m not just staying with only
people who had polio, and I’m not just working only with people who have
physical disabilities. It’s being able to learn more about the breadth of the
community and how we can work together and why we need to work together.”

From Support to Action
In another interview with the nonprofit Option B, she shared some of her life
experiences and insights. Here are some takeaways:

Build resilience. Heumann continued to face discrimination throughout her life,
which hurt and angered her, but knowing she was making a difference,
contributing, and seeing change helped her continue the fight.

Keep close connections. If you know someone living with a disability, don’t
disappear because you feel uncomfortable or don’t know how to help. Instead,
support them by listening, staying involved, and acknowledging things may be
different either temporarily or long-term. Ask what they could use help with,
offer your help, and notice the ways they can also help you.

Become a better ally. Some disabilities you can see, but others, such as
depression, cancer, diabetes, or epilepsy, you can’t. Broaden your definition
and try to understand what others are experiencing. Follow disability advocates
on social media and read relevant news stories and books.

Stop the pity. Don’t look at people with a disability with pity or assume their
life is a tragedy. They are valuable, contributing community members. They are
mothers, fathers, siblings, leaders, workers, voters, and entrepreneurs.

Normalize disabilities. Disability is a normal part of life and as such,
communities should be accessible physically, technologically, and socially.
Doing so will enrich everyone’s lives.

Love audio books, voice recognition software, or speech-to-text technology?
Those all were developed to help persons with disabilities.

Watch: On her YouTube channel, Heumann featured conversations with disability
change makers and the “Monday Minute,” where she answered viewers' questions,
such as this one where she recommends books by authors with disabilities.
