THE 1903 EDITION OF “IN THE SEVEN WOODS”

June 9, 2017 / KAK / 1 Comment

The 1903 edition of In the Seven Woods: Being Poems Chiefly of the Irish Heroic
Age by W.B. Yeats (1865 – 1939), is a small book in quatro held in the Special
Collections of the University of Victoria Library.

The 1903 edition of “In the Seven Woods” held at the University of Victoria
Library, image: @KatarzynaAnn

The book was published in July of 1903 by Elizabeth Yeats (1868 – 1940), one of
the author’s sisters, at the Dun Emer Press. Dun Emer Press was an important
press of the Celtic Revival, founded in 1902 by Yeats siblings, Elizabeth and
William. The press produced hand-printed, limited editions of Irish authors,
e.g. Lionel Pigot Johnson, Douglas Ross Hyde, George William Russell, William
Kirkpatrick Magee, William Allingham and W.B. Yeats. The text of 1903 edition of
In the Seven Woods was double printed, parts of the text are in red ink,
remaining parts in black ink.

The title page of the book reads:
“IN THE SEVEN WOODS : BEING POEMS | CHIEFLY OF THE IRISH HEROIC AGE | BY WILLIAM
BUTLER YEATS”
“THE DUN EMER PRESS | DUNDRUM | MCMIII”
A blind stamp in the middle of the title page reads “University | of |
Victoria.”

The rubricated colophon reads:
“Here ends In The Seven Woods, written by William | Butler Yeats, printed upon
paper made in Ireland, | and published by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats at the | Dun
Emer Press, in the house of Evelyn | Gleeson at Dundrum in the country of |
Dublin, Ireland, finished the six-|teenth day of July, in the year | of the big
wind | 1903.”

of Victoria Library, image: @KatarzynaAnn

Even though the colophon suggests that the book was printed on paper made in
Ireland, the fly leaves are of a Dutch origin. Front fly leaf 2 contains a
partial watermark “VAN GELDER ZONEN,” while the rear fly leaf contains a partial
watermark, which is similar to the one found in the 1891 edition of  The Picture
of Dorian Gray, which also originated from Van Gelder’s mills. Most likely the
same paper was used for the paste-downs, but the chain lines of front fly leaf 1
run vertically, while on front fly leaf 2 they run horizontally. The tight
binding does not allow closer examination of the paste-downs.

Watermark “Van Gelder Zonen” in the 1903 edition of “In the seven woods,” image:
@KatarzynaAnn

The book-block is build of nine gatherings of woven paper (4o: A2 b-i4). The
leaf size is 199 x 139 mm (the sheet of paper had to be approx. 300 x 400 mm),
the cover size is 203 x 143 mm. The cover is made from a thick bright parchment,
with a gilded title embossed. The book block is also gilded. The gatherings
are sewed together with a green thread, and green cloth ties are used to tie the
book at the fore edge.

University Victoria Library, image: @KatarzynaAnn

Not much is known about the provenance of this book, and how did it arrive to
Victoria B.C. from Ireland. There are, however, traces of notes made in pencil,
which were erased and thus illegible today.
The erased text on the top margin of front fly leaf 1 seems to read: “[000…000]
G. H[0000]sser [000…000] (?)”
The erased text on the bottom margin of front fly leaf 1 is probably a
signature: “[000…000] / 2/13”
Both notes might be associated with the books seller, or the previous owner of
the book. Especially intriguing is the question mark at the end of the upper
note. Multi spectral scanning and advanced image processing could probably allow
us to read the notes and advance the research of the history of this book.

THE MYSTERIE OF WITCH CRAFT. THOMAS COOPER. 1617

THE
MYSTERIE
OF
WITCHCRAFT.

Doctrine of
WITCH CRAFT.
LONDON

Printed by Nicholas Okes.
1617.

Size: 8,3 cm wide
18,8 cm long
2,9 cm thick

Latin inscription dated June 24, 1629, after the table of contents and errata:

“1629
June the 24
per multum risum poteris cognoscere stultum”
English translation, notably documented on Wikipedia
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latin_phrases_(P)): Through excessive
laughter one can recognize the fool.

Potential explanations: – An unrelated handwritten note, where the person was
using the paper for personal notes.

An allusion to the Ship of fools led by a woman?

Contents:

Dedicatory epistle to: Maior of the Ancient citie of Chester; the worthy
Justices of Peace, of that Countie Palatine; Grace and Peace from God the Father
through our Lord Jesus Christ be multiplied.

by Thomas Cooper

Table of contents “This treatise is digested into three bookes”
First book = 10 chapters. An explanation for why it is relevant to prosecute
witches today.
Second book = 5 chapters. Dedicated to the detection and conviction of witches
Third book = 18 chapters.

Anomalies: My book has the same pagination errors as the digitized version on
EEBO (STC code 1133). However, my version has a different title page. My title
page also has erased text, presumably because the title page provided was
supposed to be the title page for the Third Book of the treatise. The STC 1133
edition has a more elaborate title page that includes the author’s name.

In 1622, there is a new (second) edition of the book titled “Sathan transformed
into an Angell of Light, expressing his dangerous Impostures under glorious
shewes. Emplified Specially in the Doctrine of Witch-craft, and such sleights of
Satan, as are incident thereunto. Very necessary to discerne the speci-plague
raging in these days, and so to hide our selves from the snare thereof. London,
Printed by Barnard Alsop. 1622” The dedicatory epistle of the second edition is
different from that of the first.

1617: ESTC citation S108665, STC (2nd ed.), 5701. The ESTC entry (British
Library) claims that the pagination is continuous, however, this is not true.
“The second and third books each have separate dated title page; pagination and
register are continuous.” The digital version available on EEBO shows the same
dedicatory epistle, and the same pagination errors, but a different title page
than the physical book from the University of Victoria.

The only copy in North America is located in the University of Victoria rare
books, special collection. Call number: BF1581 C65.

1622: STC (2nd ed.), 5701.3 / ESTC citation number S116346

Notes: There do not seem to be any documented translations of Cooper’s book.

Catchwords: There are catchwords on each page leading to the next.

any.

DE PROPRIETATIBUS RERUM (ON THE PROPERTIES/NATURE OF THINGS)

June 9, 2017June 9, 2017 / amywclark / Leave a comment

Author: Bartholomeus Anglicus (Bartholomew the Englishman)
Date: 13th century
Measurements: Binding 15.5 x 21.5 cm; pages 14.5 x 20.5 cm.
Collation: 4 paper leaves + 75 parchment leaves + 3 paper leaves. Difficult to
discern quire structure due to the tightness of the binding, but the paper
preface notes that there were 9 gatherings or folios at the time of rebinding.
Layout: Two columns of text per page, 47 lines per column. Lead ruling of both
margins and text
Script: One hand, Gothic or Proto-Gothic(?), black ink with rubricated titles
and bi-colored large initials at the beginning of each entry.
Binding: Leather with gilt ornamentation; post-dates the manuscript, date
unclear.
Materials: Parchment, with paper leaves added during a later rebinding.

Description: Regular pagination/foliation given with Roman numerals from X to
LXXXiiii on alternating pages, as well as an index system in the back of the
book referencing these page numbers and the (rubricated?) subjects of the text.
No catchwords. The pagination and the index together suggest a missing quire,
containing pages Vi-iX, which would indicate an original total of ten quires (no
reference is given to numbers i-V in the index, so it’s unclear whether they
were part of this codex). This manuscript is an excerpted version of the work,
so that may play a role in this irregularity. Some warping of the parchment
throughout; small repairs with thread and parchment scraps, some staining.

f. 25v: parchment repair
f. 73r: manuscript index begins
f. 75r: explicit tabula alfabeti super libris proprietatibus.

Dimensions: 29cmx42.6cm; 7cm height

Notes: Throughout, quotations used by the authors of the selected documents are
rendered in italics with a source note printed in the margin.

The watermark is the coat of arms of Cardinal Richelieu: A Cardinal’s hat over a
crown and a shield with three chevrons, with tassels falling to three knots on
each side.

Greek and Latin columns switch on recto and verso sides to keep Greek text in
the more authoritative central position. (see p. 11-13)

The typeface used for the Greek is grecs du roi. This typeface was created by
Claude Garamond in 1541 and was based on the hand of Angelo Vergecio (d.1569),
royal scribe for Francis I. The same typeface was not employed for Greek in the
margins of the Latin text (see p. 546)

One gathering was misplaced by the binder. After Gg, Ii is placed before Hh.

Historical Notes: Printed at the L’imprimerie Royale du Louvre (created in 1640
under Louis XIII) and printed under the auspices of Cardinal Richelieu in 1644.
It was significantly larger than all previous editions of conciliar collections:
1523 (Paris), 2 vols.; 1530 (Cologne), 2 vols.; 1535 (Cologne), 2 vols.; 1538
(Cologne), 2 vols.; 1557 (Cologne), 3 vols.; 1567 (Cologne), 4 vols.; 1585
(Venice) 5 vols.; 1606 (Cologne) 4 vols.; 1608 (Rome) 4 vols.; 1618 (Cologne) 5
vols.; and 1636 (Paris) 9 vols. Other books printed by this press in the same
year included Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata (from 1581); Enrico Devila’s
History of the French Civil War (1559-1598); The Satires of Juvenal; The
Spiritual Exercises; and Suetonius’ Lives of the Twelve Caesars.

GIL GONZÁLEZ DÁVILA’S TEATRO ECLESIÁSTICO DE LA PRIMITIVA IGLESIA DE LAS
INDIAS OCCIDENTALES

June 9, 2017June 9, 2017 / katieholt / Leave a comment

For our project, my partner Nhora Lucia Serrano and I chose to work on Gil
González Dávila’s Teatro eclesiástico de la primitiva iglesia de las Indias
Occidentales (Madrid, 1649).  This is a two-volume ecclesiastical history
listing new world bishops. We chose this volume because of our interests in
Latin American history and culture, and the gorgeous woodcuts of each city’s
coat of arms.

BIBLIOGRAPHY:

For this copy, the title page is missing, along with the “privilegio” and
“licencia.”  You can see a scan of the missing title page and other prefatory
materials at the Universidad de Sevilla’s Fondo Antigo.  The U-Vic copy does
contain the author’s “Epístola preliminar” (introductory preface).

SIZE:

This is a folio, with 6 page groupings (for the most part). We could see the
vertical chain lines, but no watermark.

“THE PRESENT STATE OF NOVA SCOTIA” BY S. HOLLINGSWORTH

Collation: 8˚ in 4s: [a]6 [b]2, A – U4, X – Ee4

Contents: Catchwords and running titles throughout.

Binding: Spine untitled, with 6 horizontal gold lines on the spine. 3 small
holes along the binding edge of every page suggests that the book was likely
rebound. Leather spine and cover features a dark grey and brown marbled paper.

Notes: This copy is missing the map. A torn page with evidence of glue suggests
that the map was pasted in between between [b] and A gatherings. There is also
small remnant of a sheet in the binding between pages 8 and 9 – likely the other
side of the sheet where the map was bound in. Beginning and end pages are more
modern in their production and do not have chain lines. The end page features a
watermark that reads “RC | 1816”. The author’s name is not indicated on the
copy, though it has been attributed to S. Hollingsworth. The dedication and
first page of the Contents are unevenly cut making the pages approximately 20mm
narrower. The first page of the table of contents is numbered “(6)” at the top
of the page.
