We welcome special guest Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, United Nations Independent Expert on the Enjoyment of Human Rights by Persons with Albinism, for a critical discussion that epitomizes Human Rights Day 2024. Her vital work documents how harmful practices and ritual attacks continue to threaten the lives of persons with albinism in Africa and globally, challenging the fundamental principles the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created to protect. Our conversation examines how beliefs that lead to harm continue to target persons with albinism, particularly women and children. Through the framework of United Nations Resolution 47/8 on accusations of witchcraft and ritual attacks, we explore how countries worldwide are developing protective measures while respecting cultural contexts. As we mark International Human Rights Day and its vision of dignity for all people regardless of race, color, religion, abilities, or status, this discussion provides both a sobering look at ongoing human rights challenges and hope through education, awareness, and community engagement. Our incredible team ensures that, upon their return, these children are met with compassion and provided with sustainable solutions for a hopeful future. Amidst the chaos and brutality of war, we also work on a communication strategy to keep you informed about our efforts and the atrocities we witness. Every day, we face significant threats and complex political issues that challenge our mission. It's frustrating to encounter political agendas, financial interests, that detract from the real purpose of our work. Sometimes, it feels like shouting, "We are not your enemy!" We are united in fighting the same battles, yet the energy is too often diverted into superficial PR rather than genuine help for those in need. The silence we maintain is to protect the delicate operations we conduct, but the personal suffering is immense. One day, these stories will be told, preparing future human rights defenders for the difficult path ahead—even when they are doing their best. This is not about fame or recognition but about true, steadfast commitment to those who need it most. To all of you who truly know these stories, keep resisting. After all we’ve faced, nothing will ever stop us from helping those in need. We will not be silenced or intimidated because we live in a democratic world where freedom is our foundation. As I heard a few days ago: "A strong civil society is the beating heart of a healthy democracy. There is no healthy democracy without freedom. There is no healthy democracy without a strong civil society." — Alain Berset We will not compromise our values, ethics, and principles. It is our duty to speak out when we see manipulation and injustice in the system. Here are the principles that guide the Emile Foundation 👇 🌟Child-centred approach: Prioritising the needs and rights of children in all our efforts. 🌟Rebellion: Challenging injustices and advocating for change. 🌟Depth: Committing to thorough understanding and thoughtful action. 🌟Ideal: Upholding high standards and aspirations for human rights. 🌟Vigilance: Maintaining constant awareness and readiness to act against injustice. Today, on Emancipation Day, we come together to commemorate a momentous milestone in human history: the liberation of those who were oppressed and the proclamation of their inalienable rights to freedom and equality. This date not only reminds us of the end of slavery, but also prompts us to reflect on the constant fight for justice and human rights. It is a day to honor those brave men and women who, through their resistance and sacrifice, managed to break the chains of oppression. #trinidadandtobago #EmancipationProclamation * 5 Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * Rae Martens Knowledge Broker at Kids Brain Health Network, CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability and UCalgary Azrieli Accelerator Certified Level 1 Implementation Support Specialist 2mo * Report this post Child Rights Connect wants to create a world where all child human rights defenders, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, socio-economic status, disability, race, political opinion, and any other characteristics, are recognized, safe, supported, and empowered to: -take part in decisions that affect them and can keep making a positive difference in the world; -fully exercise their rights (that is: when people speak up, act, or make choices to show and use the freedoms and rights they have, like the right to learn, the right to be safe, or the right to share their ideas); call on NGOs and governments to be accountable. https://lnkd.in/gKM-JeAC CHRD STRATEGIC VISION HTTPS://CHRDS.CHILDRIGHTSCONNECT.ORG 2 Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * Child Identity Protection (CHIP) 2,389 followers 9mo * Report this post #Europe: Recent judgements contrary to the child’s #righttoidentity In a series of recent judgements at the European Court of Human Rights (#ECtHR), there has been a degressive trend from international norms, guaranteeing the child’s right to identity in #familyrelations (Art. 8(1) CRC). In the decision Gauvin-Fournis and Silliau c. France, (Application 21424/16 and 45728/17), the ECtHR by a small majority refused the applicant’s request for information about their #donors. Despite the magnitude of persons affected by this type of conception, facing a lifetime of incomplete #identities, the applicants request to be heard by the Grand Chamber was refused on the 19/2/2024. In the case of Cherrier v France (Application 18843/20) the ECtHR again refused to align the French laws with the #UNCRC related to their identity on 30/01/24. The ECtHR found that it was within #France’s margin of appreciation to not provide information about a birth mother to an #adoptee, born through "naissance sous X". These decisions present a worrying direction contrary to the State’s obligation to preserve and speedily re-establish missing elements of the child’s identity. To the contrary, the ECtHR, continues to implicitly support anonymous practices without any real opportunity for reparations for #children and persons who find themselves in these situations. It is not clear how such decisions can ever be aligned with the #CRC Committee’s 2023 recommendation to France that they “ensure that children born through assisted reproduction technologies have #accesstoinformation about their #origins before they reach the age of 18, whenever they make a request to that effect” and previous recommendations to remove the condition of the mother’s consent before the child can know their origins. There is hope in the minority decisions in both cases, which pave the way for the enjoyment the right to identity. (1) enacting laws on how can guarantee minority rights in the national-level and state-level constitution, (2) dividing of adequate power and the power of allocating natural resources, and (3) inclusivity in the political decision-making process. Furthermore, I suggest that there is a political conflict that can emerge between the state-level stakeholders and the National Unity Government (NUG) when it comes to self-governance beyond the post-conflict. I believe that it would be beneficial for all stakeholders to consider how to tackle this problem. * Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * Jamie-Lee Patrick (ISPr) Talent Acquisition Partnering Lead at One Point Four Degrees / Project Management / DEI Champion 8mo Edited * Report this post Happy Human Rights Day South Africa! Human Rights Day is a significant national observance that commemorates the Sharpeville massacre of 1960 and celebrates the country's commitment to human rights, freedom, and democracy. Here are some key points about South African Human Rights Day: Historical Context: On March 21, 1960, thousands of unarmed protesters gathered in the township of Sharpeville to protest against the apartheid pass laws, which required black South Africans to carry identification documents at all times. The peaceful demonstration turned violent when police opened fire on the crowd, killing 69 people and injuring hundreds more. Significance of Sharpeville: The Sharpeville massacre was a turning point in South Africa's struggle against apartheid, drawing international attention to the injustices of the regime and galvanizing support for the anti-apartheid movement. The tragic events of Sharpeville highlighted the need for fundamental changes to the country's racial policies and spurred resistance against apartheid both domestically and globally. Recognition of Human Rights: South African Human Rights Day serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and promoting equality and justice for all citizens. It honors the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom and democracy in the face of oppression and discrimination. Celebration and Reflection: On Human Rights Day, South Africans come together to commemorate the victims of the Sharpeville massacre and reflect on the progress made in advancing human rights since the end of apartheid. It is a time to celebrate the country's diverse cultures, values, and traditions while reaffirming the commitment to building a society based on equality, dignity, and respect for all. Overall, South African Human Rights Day is a solemn yet hopeful occasion that underscores the importance of protecting and promoting human rights as a cornerstone of democracy and nation-building. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality and the collective responsibility to uphold the principles of human dignity and freedom for future generations. * 14 1 Comment Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * Sonya Durney 4mo Edited * Report this post There is a narrative that book banning and censorship are supported by those of faith. This is not true. After reading the latest update from #UniteAgainstBookBans, I am so impressed with religious communities' work to stop censorship. From the update: "A new resolution from the Episcopal Church encourages members to advocate within their local contexts not only in opposition to book bans, but to include diverse and affirming books in church libraries as well as to preserve the history and experiences of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ faithful." Bravo, Qiana Johnson - strong work. Read the full resolution here: https://lnkd.in/g_iSSR4Z They are all connected: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom to read, freedom... From Banned Books, Banned Beliefs: "Unfortunately, some of those who want to ban books use religion as a cover for their attempts to shut down the freedom to read. If successful, book banning is a political strategy that could silence diverse religious voices and traditions that are a major part of the rich social fabric of America." "People of faith have historically been at the forefront of movements for justice, equality, and democracy. The battle over censorship is another moment when we are called to action. As with any major challenge, it can be difficult to know where to start. Thankfully, there are straightforward actions all of us from faith communities can take today to ensure the freedom to read and freedom of belief." From Gaza to Gugulethu, we must keep up the action to protect & uphold human rights. It is our responsibility to ensure everyone is protected and not just the few.
