TV WEEKEND; Seeking Mercy for Their Son's Killer. Two scenes from ''The Matthew
Shepard Story'' on NBC leave haunting imprints for very different reasons. The
obvious shock comes right at the beginning, from a stylized yet graphic re-
creation of Mr. Shepard's gruesome murder, in which he was beaten and left to
die lashed to a fence in a frozen Wyoming prairie in 1. The second comes when
Matthew's mother, played with searing stoicism by Stockard Channing, can't write
the statement the prosecution has requested - - to encourage the jury to impose
the death penalty on Aaron Mc.

Kinney, one of Mr. Shepard's two killers.''I think you're putting too much
pressure on yourself,'' a friend assures Mrs. Mc. Kinney receive mercy not
death, it's disturbing to think that the decision to pursue the death penalty is
theirs. Technically, it isn't, but legal niceties aren't as dramatically
compelling as individual forbearance. When Matthew Shepard's father (Sam
Waterston) says to Mr. Mc. Kinney, in court, ''I give you life in memory of one
who no longer lives,'' the noble sentiment - - taken from real life - - misses
the larger point: is justice a variable, dependent on the feelings of a victim's
family? Contrary to the impression left by ''The Matthew Shepard Story,'' the
variables seem to have far more to do with race and class.

This weekend, television offers an unusual opportunity to observe the inequities
in the death penalty - - not just the inherent immorality but also the haphazard
administration of it and public misperception of how the whole thing works. On
Sunday night, HBO presents ''America Undercover: The Execution of Wanda Jean,''
a documentary about an African- American woman who killed her female lover in
Oklahoma City after an argument. Wanda Jean was sentenced to death and she was
eventually executed, even though there appears to have been irregularities in
her trial, including the omission of evidence that she had significant mental
impairments.

The family of the woman who was killed didn't want Wanda Jean to be executed
either, but that desire was ignored. The documentary offers no eloquent
speeches; just blunt and often inarticulate realism. The cases took place in
different states and under different circumstances. Was one a better killing or
a nicer one, more deserving of leniency? Wanda Jean had killed once before, but
she may have been mentally unstable.

Matthew Shepard's killers had never murdered anyone, but there was an element of
torture and generalized hatred (homophobia) in their crime that made it seem
even more reprehensible. To borrow from the Bible, the question of who shall
live and who shall die seems beyond human judgment. Shepard's parents, has its
own sorrowful and worthy desire - - to elicit some good from a tragic death,
without considering how it might muddy legal waters. Based on the same case,
''The Laramie Project,'' on HBO last Saturday, explored why it happened in
Laramie. The NBC movie makes it personal: this happened to Matthew Shepard and
his family.''The Matthew Shepard Story'' doesn't aim for originality but for
emotional punch, and in this it succeeds.

This isn't so much Matthew Shepard's story as a parable of Matthew Shepard,
using his brief life and terrible end to promote tolerance and good will. It's
clear that pieties will be in abundance early on, when the camera moves from a
photograph of Matthew, at a memorial service, to the stained glass image of
Jesus and other saintly figures. The film is constructed as a kind of
pilgrimage, as Matthew's parents seek to understand who their son was,
specifically in his life as a gay man. Through recollections played as
flashbacks (in which Matthew is played by the angelic- looking Shane Meier),
they come to realize that their acceptance of Matthew was superficial. They
didn't appreciate the discrimination Matthew experienced, unaware of some of it,
unable to comprehend what they did know. They come to re- evaluate their own
hatred for his killers and decide to focus on espousing acceptance rather than
revenge. There aren't many shadings, but the actors are strong enough to
sometimes make you think there are.

BOSKO AND BRUNO [1932]

Bosko and Bruno (1. Plot Summary. Bosko, carrying his hobo stick, travels along
the railroad tracks with his dog, Bruno. Unfortunately, they're both on the
tracks as they cross a bridge and realize that a train is coming perilously
near.

They manage to escape via a handcar, which was waiting for them on the tracks.
Bruno escapes, but not before allowing his poor master to think he's dead. Bosko
is angry at his pet, but outrage turns to fear when the sound of another train
gets them both panicking again. The pair's adventures continue as they try to
steal a chicken for her eggs. Finally, they end up on a runaway boxcar and have
a second encounter with the obnoxious cow.

Bosko is the first recurring character in Leon Schlesinger's cartoon series, and
is also the star of over three dozen Looney Tunes shorts released by Warner
Bros. He was voiced by Carman Maxwell and Johnny Murray during the 1. Don
Messick during the 1. Hugh Harman created Bosko in 1. Harman began thinking
about making a sound cartoon with Bosko in 1. Walt Disney. April 1. Universal to
market their new cartoon character.

In May 1. 92. 9, they produced a short pilot cartoon, similar to Max
Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell cartoons, Bosko, the Talk- Ink Kid that showcased
their ability to animate soundtrack- synchronized speech and dancing. The short,
plotless cartoon opens with live action footage of Ising at a drafting table.

turning into an accordion is later reused in Bosko and Bruno (1932). Bosko and

After he draws Bosko on the page, the character springs to life, talks, sings,
and dances. Ising returns Bosko to the inkwell, and the short ends. The short is
a landmark in animation history as being the first to include synchronized
speech.

This cartoon set Harman and Ising . It would not be seen by a wide audience
until 7. Cartoon Network's special Toonheads: The Lost Cartoons, a compilation
special of rare material from the Warner Bros/Turner archives. This could be
called sloppiness on the part of Harman and Ising, but it also indicates the
uncertain nature of the character itself. Bosko became the star vehicle for the
studio's new Looney Tunes cartoon series.

Bosko wore long pants and a derby hat, and he had a girlfriend named Honey and a
dog named Bruno. He was also sometimes accompanied by an orphan cat named Wilbur
and an often antagonistic goat, particularly in early cartoons.

In keeping with the stereotypes of the minstrel shows, Bosko is a natural at
singing, dancing, and playing any instrument he encounters. In fact, Bosko has
the ability to play virtually anything as an instrument, be it a wooden bridge-
turned- xylophone or a Dachshund- turned- accordion. In early cartoons, Bosko
(voiced by Carman Maxwell) even speaks in an exaggerated version of black
speedh (However, this was only in the first cartoon. All later cartoons would
give him a falsetto voice). Despite the parallels between Bosko and the
blackface performers, Ising in later years would deny that the character was
ever supposed to be a black caricature, and rather claim he was supposed to be .
His cartoons are notable for their generally weak plots and their abundance of
music, singing, and dancing (though there were exceptions, such as Bosko the
Doughboy, in 1. These were the early days of sound cartoons, and audiences were
enthralled simply to see characters talking and moving in step with the music.

In terms of animation, the shorts are on- par with Disney's shorts of the same
period. Harman and Ising were allowed production costs of up to $6.

In terms of music and sound recording, however, Harman and Ising had one up on
Disney as the Warner Bros. Abe Lyman) and sound recording equipment and staff
free of charge whereas Disney had to pay for all this himself. In addition,
Harman and Ising did not have to worry over details concerning the distribution
of their cartoons as the Warner Bros. Though they might seem boring and
rudimentary by today's standards, Bosko's films were quite popular in their day
and he rivaled Mickey Mouse in popularity in the early 1. Disney cartoons would
eventually surge ahead in popularity on the basis of stronger plot and character
development.

Having learned from Walt Disney's experiences with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, they
had carefully kept all rights to the Bosko character, and they took him with
them. The two found work with MGM where they launched the Happy
Harmonies cartoon series. At first, Bosko appeared in his original design and
some of the old animation from the Looney Tunes series was even reused in
those Happy Harmonies that features Bosko.

After only two cartoons, the character was redesigned into an identifiable black
boy with an overactive imagination. This redesigned Bosko, whom many consider to
be a different character altogether, in spite of having the same name, only
starred in a handful of cartoons before Harman and Ising discontinued the
character.

Ward), is led by a mysterious voice to build a theater that shows nothing but
cartoons of Bosko's girlfriend, Honey. Babs does so, and the resulting audience
laughter rejuvenates the ailing Honey and reveals the voice, as well as the
vaultkeeper to be none other than Bosko (voiced by Don Messick) himself.
Curiously, the cartoon depicts Bosko and Honey as dog- like funny animals
similar to the lead characters of the later TV show Animaniacs, presumably so as
not to offend viewers with the original black- face characterizations. In an
even briefer cameo, Bosko is seen in a portrait in the 1. Space Jam, this time
in his original form. He also appears in his original form in the Animaniacs
cartoon, . In 2. 00. 3, Warner Home Video officially released the initial pilot
film Bosko, the Talk- Ink Kid as an extra on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection:
Volume 1 DVD box set.

Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 3 (released in 2. Looney
Tunes short, Sinkin' in the Bathtub (which originally introduced Bosko and Honey
to audiences in 1. Looney Tunes Golden Collection: Volume 6 (released in 2.
Bosko films on a disc officially devoted to Bosko and other early 1. The WB
cartoons are under direct ownership of the studio itself, while WB also handles
distribution for the MGM cartoons, owned by corporate sibling Turner
Entertainment.

Time Warner has also acquired rights to the character himself, allowing his
appearances in the 1.
