WHY FOCUS ON HEAVEN? “I’m fed up with earth.” That feeling had been growing in Sheila’s heart for months. Between the nightly discouragements of the evening news, wars abroad, and friends hurting in every way imaginable, she’d just had it. To add insult to injury (or vice versa), an innocent flip of her head one day resulted in such excruciating pain that Sheila couldn’t stand up. After nearly 18 awful hours in an ER, she and husband, Barry, learned that she hadn’t broken anything, but had torn ligaments, which would be extremely painful, but heal on their own. That experience led Sheila to seek God in His Word for comfort, as usual, about so much misery in the world. “When everything else in the world seems upside down, God’s Word is right-side up,” she says. The more she studied what the Bible says about our eternal home, the more peace she felt, as well as eagerness for that reality. “Being fed up with earth absolutely makes sense to me now. We were made for more. The yearning you and I feel at times, even on our best days, is because we were made for heaven and nothing else will do.” WHAT HEAVEN IS LIKE After making the case biblically that heaven is indeed a real place, Sheila delves into eight intriguing aspects of heaven: Heaven is up, i.e. it is referred to as the “third heaven” after the earth’s atmosphere and outer space; heaven is with Jesus, heaven is our real home; heaven is comforting for those left behind; heaven is where we’ll be fully known at last; in heaven, we’ll have glorified bodies; heaven is not boring; and heaven is full of wonder. Just two in more detail are: * Heaven is Where We’ll be Fully Known at Last. “Let me say up front that I firmly believe we will recognize and know each other in heaven,” Sheila states. “Not only that, but I believe we’ll recognize godly men and women who died long before us.” One of the supporting Scripture passages she refers to is Mark 9:2-8, where Peter, James, and John see the glorified Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah on the mount of transfiguration. “Have you ever wondered how the disciples recognized Moses and Elijah? This was long before photographs and magazines. She then refers to Matthew 16:15-17, where Simon Peter tells Jesus that he believes He’s the Messiah. “God himself revealed Christ’s identity to Peter. The Holy Spirit gave him understanding.” * The Wonder of Heaven. “Here on earth, even in the best moments, we barely have a glimpse of the wonder of heaven,” Sheila believes. “It’s everything you’ve ever dreamt of in its purest form and so much more. When you’ve grabbed hold of everything this world offers and found it heartbreakingly wanting, it’s easy to give in to despair.” To counter that limited thinking, she quotes popular author Randy Alcorn: “We think of ourselves as fun-loving and of God as a humorless killjoy. But we’ve got it backward. It’s not God who’s boring, it’s us. Did we invent wit, humor, and laughter? No, God did. We’ll never begin to. exhaust God’s sense of humor and his love for adventure. The real question is this: How could God not be bored with us?” EARTHLY DISAPPOINTMENTS There’s an endless list of sorrows people face in this life, Sheila points out: loneliness, fear, bankruptcy, loss of a job, an unexpected diagnosis, a son or daughter lost in the world of drugs, divorce, etc. Will those profound disappointments follow believers to heaven and tarnish eternity for them, she posits? “We live in a culture that promises so much and, more often than not, fails to deliver. It’s hard not to become skeptical about everything. There is something in us, as if woven into our DNA, that believes that life should be better than what we’re experiencing right now,” she says. “You do it all and yet you fall into bed each night and think, Is this all there is? If you feel that, I want you to know you are not alone. This is not an unnatural feeling but a deep desire for what you were actually made for.” To counter the fear that even heaven can’t relieve us of all our earthly suffering, Sheila offers a number of solid encouragements, all based in God’s Word: * Disappointment doesn’t exist in heaven. “Disappointment is real. It’s party of our lives on this earth, but (it) doesn’t exist in heaven,” she states, based on Paul’s description of heaven in 1 Corinthians 2:9-11, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.” * Jesus will be there. “We’ll be home and we’ll be loved and we’ll be whole and we will join in worshipping Christ, the Lamb of God, the King of Kings forever,” she says, based on Revelation 5:13. That’s where John tells us every creature in heaven and earth and even in the sea will sing, “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” * Your friends and family are there. “We’ll experience the greatest reunions we’ve ever known. We’ll get to see friends and family who have trusted in Jesus and who’ve gone before us – and not as they were but as they are without any pain or sorrow, without anxiety or depression or any kind of sickness,” Sheila exhorts us. One Scripture she uses to illustrates this is 2 Samuel 12:23, where David eats again after mourning his son, who has just died. “But why should I fast when he is dead? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him one day, but he cannot return to me.” HEAVEN CHANGES HOW WE LIVE NOW In response to the long list of earthly trials we face, Sheila offers another list to contemplate daily: We are spiritual lambs who are becoming lions of the faith, there will be no more death in glory, nor grief, nor a curse on all creation, nor hurt, nor unmet needs, nor sin itself! So how should that affect our daily lives now? she asks. “Jesus tells them (the disciples on the Mount of Olives) that, as no one but the Father knows the hour when He will return, they should be ready, they should be waiting, and they should be expectant,” like the ten bridesmaids in one of the Matthew 25 parables. With the support of that chapter’s parable of the talents, she illustrates how we should now live. “What’s clear from the story that Jesus told is that how great our gifts are doesn’t matter at all to God. After all, He is the one who gave them out in the first place. All that matters is what we will do with what we’ve been given. We live in a culture and at times, a church, that elevates giftedness. None of us can take credit for the gifts we’ve been given. They are just that, gifts. We are able to glorify God by what we do with them.” AND WHAT OF OUR PETS?? “It is hard to put into words the love that pets bring to us as humans,” Sheila says. “If that was God’s original plan in Eden, then someday we will once again enjoy these beautiful gifts from God.” She points out that heavenly animals are mentioned many places in Scripture, such as 2 Kings 2:11, where Elijah is taken up to heaven in a carriage of fire drawn by horses, Revelation 6:2, where John tell us, “I looked up and saw a white horse standing there,” and Isaiah 11:6-9, which tells us about the wolf and lamb, leopard and baby goat, calf and yearling lying together or with lions. “If animals were always part of God’s plan for us, I’m sure they will part of our eternal lives with Him. In heaven, we will be who we are now, but without sin, so animals that knew a certain beauty, grace, and strength in Eden will be perfected once again, too.” For more information on Sheila Walsh please click the LINK! The doorbell would ring and there would—no one would be there.” Isela grew up in a family plagued by paranormal experiences and fear in their home. In a search for answers, her mother embraced the occult. Isela says, “She believed that someone had placed a spell on the family because of the all the bad experiences that she had and we all had.” As a teenager Isela followed her mother’s lead into the occult. “I wanted to seek answers and I needed guidance of some sort. And I thought, you know, if my mom seeks guidance through readings and, tarot card readings and palm readers, I figured hey, this is the way to go. This is the way to get answers.” She never found the answers she was looking for. Her young life remained trapped and hopeless. “I wanted to end my life. I thought, what am I living for? What do I have to live for? I was lost. And I turned to drugs, alcohol, started heavily drinking. Sometimes I would walk all night because I had nowhere to sleep.” She learned to read tarot cards and began practicing witchcraft in an effort to gain control of her life. But for Isela there was no escape from the fear and darkness that defined her life. “I knew that the devil was with me this whole time. Like I felt him. I felt a negative presence because I wanted the negative presence, as weird as it sounds. I thrived on the negative. I thrived on the dark—I thrived to feel the darkness because I was so consumed and I was in such a bad place that that was all I knew.” Eventually she got off drugs and had a child. She moved in with her boyfriend whom she would later marry. But the spiritual darkness followed her, and became evident even to her young daughter. Isela explains, “She just randomly, out of nowhere, started pointing, from where she was sitting, and she was saying ‘Monster! The monster close to me, the monster touched my feet!’ And she was just trying to like move away from whatever she was looking at and I thought ‘Oh my goodness, I –what is this?’ I was just anxious. I couldn’t sleep at night. When I would wake up in the morning I would look around and I always felt like there was something there.” The encounters with demonic spirits multiplied and became more intense around Isela and her daughter. “She had handprints on her,” says Isela. “On her body. Then it escalated to bite marks. I was beyond myself. Because how do I protect my daughter? Like what do I do? I didn’t believe in God at that time. My husband would tell me ‘You need to pray.’ And I would say, ‘ that’s not going to work, what does that even do?’” Desperate, with no other options, Isela asked her aunt who was a pastor for prayer. “She prayed with all of us in the house. And I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. And I told my husband, I felt incredible. Like a very peaceful feeling. And he said that was the Holy Spirit. And I said what does that mean? But okay, whatever that means I’ll take it. I love that feeling.” But as they prayed a candle exploded in another room. Isela says, “Something had caused that. Something didn’t like the prayer. Something didn’t like the good things that were going on in that house.” Isela then reached out to her uncle who was also a pastor for help. “My uncle asked me, ‘Do you accept God in your life?’ You know I thought about it and said I will do whatever it takes to help my daughter.’” He led her in a prayer for repentance and forgiveness. “I repeated the words that my uncle was saying. Again, I felt that overwhelming sense of peace. And I knew, after I said that prayer that my life was going to change. I knew. I didn't know how because I didn’t understand the concept yet. I just knew this is something big,” she says. Things began to change right away. In the following weeks she says God filled her with the Holy Spirit and gave her incredible joy. “At that moment I knew that this was something that was happening and it was supernatural. And to hear that it was a gift from God, I thought He loves me that much. He loves me that much to give me –to let me have this gift. Like why do I deserve this? I felt very loved, like after everything that I’ve been through and experienced, and all of the bad things I had ever done, all of a sudden I have God actually showing up in my life and saying, ‘Hello, I love you.’ You know. It’s just an amazing feeling. It’s an overwhelming feeling of love and peace and joy and just everything that’s good. You know, it comes from Him.” Since the day she invited Jesus into her life, the demonic darkness that once defined her, has been replaced by the light and presence of God. She says, “I feel new, completely new. And to me that’s just amazing. Because I never thought I could –I could be different. I was in the dark for so long and just, to have that light upon me is just the most gratifying and the most amazing and beautiful feeling in the world. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I will never go back, ever.” 700 Club WOMAN SEES AGAIN AFTER TWO YEARS OF BLINDNESS Mchodey lives with her family in a remote village in Kenya. For more than two years, she was blind due to cataracts in both of her eyes. Mchodey explained, “Before, I did chores like fetching water and firewood, and looked after livestock. After I went blind, I couldn’t do anything. I just slept in the house and waited for people to do everything for me. Even when I needed to go to the bathroom, I couldn’t go by myself. I got very depressed and hated myself. I felt like I was going to lose my mind. I almost took my own life, because I felt like I couldn’t go on living without my eyesight." When an Operation Blessing medical team went to her village, Mchodey eagerly sought our help. She was one of eighty-four people there who received free cataract surgeries. Mchodey exclaimed, “When they removed the bandages from my eyes, I was amazed that I could see so clearly again! I shouted, ‘God has indeed blessed me, His child!’ When I arrived back home, people came to witness that I got my eyesight back! I am very grateful, and I pray every day that God may bless you and increase you, so you can reach out to help others in need.” 700 Club BROUGHT TO TEARS BY GOD'S FAITHFULNESS “The doctors gave me the bleak outlook,” Patti Nichols said. “I could not believe it. ‘Oh, God, what do I do now? He's my best friend.’ The worst thing that I could imagine would be losing him.” On March 8, 2015, Doug and Patti were vacationing in Florida. Having walked the beach earlier, they sat down for lunch, and that’s when Patti noticed there was something terribly wrong with her husband. “I looked over at him and I thought, ‘Oh, gosh, he's having a stroke,’” Patti said. “His face was not quite right and when he was talking to me it was all gibberish. I said, ‘We need to go to the doctor now.’” Patti drove Doug to the ER. Hours later, doctors told Patti that he had indeed experienced a mini stroke and that they would monitor him overnight. She returned to their condo to get some rest, only to receive a call letting her know that Doug was moved to another hospital and that he had suffered a massive stroke in the ambulance. “I met the doctor there and he said, ‘Come with me.’ So, we went to the little room and he showed me the scan of his brain,” Patti said. ‘As you can see, he lost two thirds of the right side of his brain, which affected his left side of the body. We don't know if he's going to make it through the night.’ It was scary. Then, I was talking to God and I was just saying, ‘You know what? It is in your hands.” Patti picked up her phone and called everyone she could think of asking them to pray for Doug. Then something happened that night. “As I was laying there, I was worried about not being able to go to sleep and what was going to happen next,” Doug said. “I felt that there was like a presence in the room that I couldn't explain. In hindsight, I guess that could have been all the intercessory prayers that were happening at that time. Its origin was somewhere from God, that's all I know. It calmed me and eventually I fell asleep for a while. The next morning my wife did come in the room. The first thing that I said to her was, ‘Remember, you promised to God, in sickness or in health, till death do we part.’” “Seeing Doug there after his stroke in the ICU with that big smile on his face, it just, I knew things were okay,” Patti said. “I just knew it. I knew God had us and we were going to be fine.” Doug had an atrial fibrillation, the cause of his strokes, that doctors were trying to bring under control with medication. He also still lacked motor function on the left side of his body. But prayers continued to pour in, and by day eight, Doug’s Afib was under control and he began walking. “Incredible,” Doug said. “I couldn't believe that I was back on my feet. ‘God is at work, look at what God has done.’ That's when the real impact of the intercessory prayers was starting to hit me. ‘Here it is, living proof, right? I can walk again.’” Doug was in rehab for four months, regaining ninety-five percent of his motor functions. A surgery was performed to correct his Afib and he soon began driving and working again. Then, nearly one year to the day, Doug and Patti returned to Florida to finish their vacation. “I was going to get my run on the beach, which I had been cheated out of the first trip,” Doug said. “It was the most emotional run that you could ever imagine. I was literally running and crying, praising God. I decided I was going to collect some shells to remember the run by. Little did I know that on Christmas I would receive a shadow box from my daughter with the shells. It also had the verse of Isaiah 40:31: ‘They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up on wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary, walk and not faint.’ And that shadow box has become my memorial stone.” Doug now acts as a peer mentor, counseling and encouraging others who have suffered strokes. He and Patti give all the credit to God for his survival and miraculous recovery. “I'm very grateful to God after everything we went through,” Patti said. “I thank Him all the time for giving us more time together. It's very satisfying and it's very peaceful knowing that He has always had our backs and that he is in our life permanently.” “Still brings me to tears,” Doug said. “Everybody gathered and were praying, it was an unbelievable effort to save me and heal me. It's all God, it's not me, and it's all for His glory. Prayer is powerful, and I am a living testimonial to the healing power of God." Today’s Bible Reading 10/31/2024 TITUS 1:2 This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised them before the world began.
