UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS SHELL A RUSSIAN AMMUNITION DEPOT

BY FINBARR O’REILLY, PHOTOGRAPHER

REPORTING FROM KHERSON REGION, UKRAINE

That’s me riding atop a 2S7 Pion artillery cannon during an operation to strike
a depot housing Russian ammunition.

The soldiers stopped to set up at an abandoned firing position used by the
Russians. The goal was to push Russian forces away from the bank of the nearby
Dnipro River.

The mood was businesslike as they unpacked shells. It was very cold, and
everyone was trying to keep warm.

The shell was inscribed with a message for the Russian soldiers.

First the Ukrainians loaded the shell; they then loaded the propellant that
fires the shell out of the cannon.

And then: boom. I had earplugs in, but my ears were ringing for the rest of the
day.
