Yo dude, I jI’ve been trying to play it cool, but it sucks. I held off telling
people, but you’re going to find out tomorrow. I feel ashamed telling people my
family’s broke. Everyone judges you for your clothes, your phone, now I can’t
keep up. You’ll figure it out when I don’t show up for school tomorrow. I’m in
denial. I don’t want to accept that I can’t pay for school anymore. It’s unfair.
What did I do to deserve this? How come other people don’t have to worry about
money? Why is my life so different just cause I was born into a certain family?
All the other kids at school don’t have to deal with problems. Every day now I
think about how I’m going to pay for things. Why does someone else get to decide
on my value and the value of my work? Well, it’s been a few days, but it finally
sunk in. She told me last week when she lost her job that she wasn’t going to
support me anymore. I was in a daze for the past 3 days. I didn’t leave the
house to see anyone. It’s like the 5 stages of grief, and now I’m in acceptance.
She’s really defeated. Who’s going to hire her now? She’s never held a job for
more than a year. Don’t know what to do. You don’t really learn in school how to
make someone feel good about themselves. I want to help her get up and leave the
house. She said she can’t support me anymore. She lost her job last week.
Manager didn’t give a reason, just fired her. She was proud of her work and what
she did, but now she doesn’t have anything. No more going out…no more school. No
more friends…who’s going to want to hang out with someone who can’t pay for
anything. No more future. I’ve got to earn my own money now. Everything is going
to be different now. She’s not going to pay for my school anymore. I’m going to
have to drop out and get a job. So much for being the next Chirs Ofili. I wanted
to be an artist that people looked up to and respected.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to help people be understood.

We formed in response to changes in the landscape of communication. Who we
communicate with has changed: with increased geographic mobility, many of us
interact with people who experience and understand the world differently. And,
how we communicate has changed: our primary mediums are now written mediums such
as texting, emails, the Internet, that strip communication to only words and
emoticons. As we all interpret words differently, we now live in a world full of
misunderstandings and people talking past each other, failing to connect. We
believe technology can help.

We are a research collaborative bringing together leaders in the fields of
linguistics, communication, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. If you’re
interested in being a part of this mission, contact us at jobs@lexiconlabs.nyc
