BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN BY JESSICA KNOLL – REVIEW

June 9, 2024 AngeLeave a comment

True crime as an industry is often said to shed light on heinous crimes
committed by the most nefarious criminals — but what results from that is
instead of paying attention to the victims’ or survivors’ accounts, and their
need for support and resources, we’ve come to morbidly fixate on the psyche of
the perpetrators.

“Bright Young Women” shifts this perspective. Inspired by the Ted Bundy case,
Jessica Knoll illustrates well-rounded characters who are victims or survivors
of a serial killer on the loose. This story is told from two first-person
narratives, one from the perspective of Pamela, a bright and assiduous
university student as well as the president of her sorority who strives to seek
justice for her friends, and another one from Ruth, a young woman who was on a
path of success but became one of the early victims of the serial killer Decades
later, Ruth’s girlfriend, Tina, works with Pamela, fighting tooth-and-nail to
put this case to an end.

BANAL PLOT

May 30, 2024May 31, 2024 AngeLeave a comment

The fiery pits of hell are often feared as a supernatural force that could
devour the human race at its worst, but what The First Omen unveils is that
these fires are stoked by men themselves.

POOR THINGS – REVIEW OF ALASDAIR GRAY’S NOVEL & YORGOS LANTHIMOS’
FILM ADAPTATION

May 25, 2024May 25, 2024 AngeLeave a comment

> “Truth, beauty and goodness are not mysterious, they are the commonest, most
> obvious, most essential facts of life, like sunlight bread, and air.”

There’s been a resurgence of eccentric cinema that draws the experiences of the
oddball and critiques the sheepish dull standards we’re supposed to stick to,
and Yorgos Lanthimos’ film Poor Things does that, and more. While the tale seems
to be based on very recent commentary about today’s society, this film is based
on Alasdair Gray’s experimental novel from 1992. Both celebrating weirdness and
feminism, the pieces of media nevertheless have a slighly different focus, and
here’s how:

THIS SKIN WAS ONCE MINE AND OTHER DISTURBANCES BY ERIC LAROCCA – REVIEW

April 2, 2024April 22, 2024 AngeLeave a comment

Eric LaRocca has always fused body horror with the regular, almost ‘mundane’
horror that comes with the complex dynamics of interpersonal relationships. This
anthology is no different, specifically focusing on more gothic settings like
the childhood homes of the bereaved ones. They have a unique way of bringing
grief to the surface, opening it up — quite literally, to expose it and excavate
it from the depths of something the characters didn’t know existed.

APPARITIONS BY ADAM POTTLE – REVIEW

February 29, 2024March 1, 2024 AngeLeave a comment

“My first language wasn’t Sign. It was violence. When they spoke to me — when
anyone speaks to me — they speak in ghosts. That’s what words are. We don’t see
them, but we feel them.”

Many of us don’t know what it’s like to be deprived of language, but the main
character of ‘Apparitions’ does — which means he’s also deprived of love,
knowledge, understanding, and the ability to process what goes on around him,
and in people’s minds. With the Deaf teenager having grown up in an extremely
abusive and neglectful household, his purview finally broadens when he meets
another fellow Deaf teenager, Felix, at the mental institution he’s placed in.
Learning Sign Language changes everything for him, and Felix does too. But with
Felix’s past, the tool that the nameless teen has acquired to communicate and
navigate the world becomes a wrench for Felix to twist and pull to revolve
around his own ambitions.

ANNIHILATION BY JEFF VANDERMEER – REVIEW

February 28, 2024February 28, 2024 Ange2 Comments

This is a surreal, weird, and profound epistolary novel told through a
fascinating narrative with a heavy emphasis on semiotics. With the mysterious
Area X seemingly ‘destabilizing’ whatever is in it, the four scientists find
that exploring the abandoned place means exploring their own identity as well.
