Your weekly round-up of the latest manufacturing news, insight and intelligence Having trouble viewing this email? Weekly News Tuesday November 14th, 2023 From the Editor Once again, and with little surprise, the motif this week is heavily electric. We begin with Hyundai, which has announced it will build a dedicated electric vehicle plant at the Ulsan complex. The new plant will support Hyundai’s growth in electric vehicle production and will use an innovative manufacturing platform developed at the company’s innovation centre in Singapore with a focus on improving worker safety, convenience and efficiency. The OEM is to invest $1.53 billion in the project, with construction scheduled to be completed in 2025 and production to start in the Q1 2026. Staying in South Korea, Polestar has solidified plans to expand its manufacturing operations for the fully-electric Polestar 4, with this next phase of its production journey involving the incorporation of manufacturing activities in Busan, to supplement its current production in Hangzhou Bay, China. The Busan facility, scheduled to commence operations in the latter part of 2025 is the result of an agreement between Polestar, Geely Holding and Renault Korea Motors (RKM) to facilitate the contract manufacturing of the EV model. As electrification expands, the task to develop increasingly efficient and cost-effective batteries in line with surging demand is taking centre stage. AMS spoke to Colorado-based solid-state battery developer Solid Power about its unique approach to battery chemical composition, and to robotics technology company Comau, which is being tasked with developing appropriate cell handling and assembly processes as well as supporting digitalisation capabilities. The global electrification shift brings with it an array of automotive production challenges, and most of its successes are testament to the need for collaboration in one form or another. Recognising this, Stellantis has again brought together its technical experts with suppliers and startups from around the world in its eighth instalment of what it is calling ‘Factory Booster Day (FBD).’ Sixty-four suppliers collaborated with Stellantis, “to audition and possibly adopt” innovations to tackle challenges ranging from CO2 emissions to improving product quality, cost reduction and fostering industry-leading customer experience. Ideas generated from past FBD’s have already been adopted throughout Stellantis’ global production network and the event is gaining recognition for producing measurable outcomes in automotive production.
